Continuing the musical theme I was thinking about sad songs because sad songs say so much. [So turn them on, turn ’em on…] Are my platforms properly sequined? (Ok enough with Elton John already. The point and question I was getting to was who do you think can sing a sad the saddest? I always found that Emmylou Harris could really bring a tear to my eye when she sings about loss and regret. For example there is this cover of a Bruce Springsteen song that I find particularly evocative in a way that the Boss only hints at.

Red Dirt Girl had a few, here are two.
Bang the Drum Slowly
Red Dirt Girl
So, who is better? Let us know who can make you find it is getting dusty in here.

Harry Chapin seemed to hit on something with The Cats and The Cradle. Or whatever the title of that song was.
Carol King:
It’s too late
So Far Away
The Cure:
Disintegration
They were good mope-rockers in general but that zeroes I’m on the sad song angle.
On the Mope-Rock category, another entry:
The Smiths, There Is A Light That Never Goes Out.
Why has nobody mentioned “Blood on the Saddle” by Tex Ritter?
I believe someone just did.
I think the Cowboy Junkies are right up there. Here are two great covers.

Hmmm. Tried to post some links and my post got rejected outright, not even a moderation. Hey! I work here now! (At least I hope so.)

Well at least I can post them individually.
And now they magically show up. It’s da voodoo I tells ya, it’s da voodoo!
‘Ol moderation machine got ya eh? All I can say is…been there done that. I think it’s become aware of it’s own power and humans can no longer control it. Today IMAO, tomorrow the world!!
Actually it did go to moderation but I don’t have my wordpress account logged in at work so couldn’t approve my own posts. Didn’t see the email alert until ranting about it.
Still begs the question why 2 videos in a post goes to moderation without an “Awaiting moderation” alert on site.
Loretta Lynn might be right. Country music is dead. They might call the music they play today “country”, but it’s really just an intergalactic bug in an Edgar suit. Thanks for the reminder of good country sounds. I have to say I am surprised how much The Dixie Chick’s Travelling Soldier sounds so much like Red Dirt Girl. That song gets my vote.
I generally liked the Dixie Chicks, until they decided to go all in on insulting America overseas.
#1 saddest song ever: Everybody Hurts by R.E.M.
Runner up: Father and Son by Cat Stevens, aka Yusuf Islam or something
Saddest movie ever? The Broken Circle Breakdown, a Belgian film that features a lot of bluegrass music, and tons of tragedy. They nail the music, the movie nails you.
The light keeps comin’ on
I got water in the fuel
My brakes are gone
I got on left front tire throwin’ thread
By tomorrow morning I could be dead
Baby, maybe, you’ve been right all along
