I saw it last night. Let’s run down the list.
Chromatic sets, beautiful landscapes, idealisation of one racial physique, exquisitely choreographed military maneuvers. One race, one nation, one Emperor. The highest ideal is to fight and to die willingly for this cause.
Not only was this a fascist movie, it was the MOST fascist movie since the 1940s. Save your money for a rent of “Iron Monkey” instead. At least that one has a monkey in it.

1) Hero is gorgeous propaganda. You can’t apply a political agenda as a measurement of art, they’re 2 different spheres.

Derbyshire is right about Hero being authoritarian, irredentist propaganda. I liked it a bunch more than he did, on an aesthetic level. And he seems to not understand Daoism, if he thinks the main thrust of the movie was in any sense Daoist. At best, it used some of the trappings of Daoism as intellectual furniture, like a interior designer dabbling in feng shui.
