  1. And FDR was the Democrat of Democrats. He gave us Social Security as well. The real question is can we afford to stop the program? What will that do to the economy? I really don’t know and I don’t think any one “knows” for sure. We could phase it out but just stopping a program that’s kept farmers from losing their land doesn’t seem like the best idea at the moment. One of the reason it was developed is that farming is not always a cash rich business. It’s expensive to do and the profits don’t always cover the loses. Weather is a huge factor and no one, not even Algore can control that.

That said paying peanut farmers like Jimma’Carter not to grow peanuts to keep the price of peanuts artificially high seems counter productive to me. The more you grow the more you make should be how this goes, but somehow it isn’t that easy. Maybe something that should be addressed is the sometimes obscene percentage profits from the middlemen, the packagers, of food. The big food conglomerates that surely are in anti trust waters. Talk about a stranglehold on our economy. But then again, what do I know except the same box of cereal I bought for $1.00 years ago now costs almost $4.00. That’s 300 % rise in 20 years, I know wages haven’t gone up that much and farmers profits haven’t either. As I said earlier though, what do i know?
