Link of the Day: Snopes Tries, Fails, to Make John Wayne Look Bad

John Wayne once said that the taking of land from Native Americans was justifiable because they were “selfishly trying to keep it for themselves.”

Not exactly… but you can judge for yourself.

Anyway, Wayne sums it up quite nicely in the penultimate sentence:

What happened between their forefathers and our forefathers is so far back — right, wrong or indifferent — that I don’t see why we owe them anything.

  1. They killed and ate the people here before them to get the land, at least we just killed them.

And if you think the Arapahoe would have been happier to lose their land to the Sioux than to whitey, well, don’t get your provincialism, racism and paternalism on me.

  2. The white man redistributed land from the rich to the poor. It was social justice, less than 1% of the worlds population held 16.5% of it’s land area, in the case of North America alone. or 4% of the worlds population holding 28.5% of the worlds land if you include South America. When we got here around 1500, we went right to work redistributing.

  3. “I’m quite sure that the concept of a government-run reservation would have an ill effect on anyone. But that seems to be what the socialists are working for now — to have everyone cared for from cradle to grave.”

    Love it

  4. Hedley Lamarr: If you will just sign this, Governor. Right here.
Governor William J. Le Petomane: Yes, yes. What the hell is it?
Hedley Lamarr: Well, under the provisions of this bill, we would snatch two hundred thousand acres of Indian land, which we have deemed unsuitable for their use at this time. They’re such children.
Governor William J. Le Petomane: Two hundred thousand acres? Two hundred thousand acres? What’ll it cost, man, what’ll it cost?
Hedley Lamarr: [brings out a carton of paddleballs] A box of these.
Governor William J. Le Petomane: Are you crazy? They’ll never go for it. And then again they might. Those little red devils… they love toys!
