I need your help

To assuage your fears it does not involve wiring money to Nigeria. Although now that I think about it…

Anyway, I wanted to ask for suggestions for future Midnight Specials. I got plenty but I aim to please, even if I miss the toilet. So, tell me who you would like to be featured. Can’t promise I will do any or all but I want to keep everyone at least mildly amused.

  1. Thematic lineups:
    e.g.

    Monsters:
    Edgar Winter – Frankenstein
Dave Edmunds – Creature from the Black Lagoon
    Blue Öyster Cult – Godzilla
Blondie – Giant Ants from Space
    …..

    Outer Space:
    David Bowie – Space Oddity
Montrose – Space Station Number 5
    Stray Cats – Blast Off
Robert Gordon & Link Ray – Flying Saucer Rock & Roll
    The Muffs – Outer Space
    ….

    Food:
    B-52s – Butter Beans
    various artists – Jambalya
The Donnas – Well Done (it’s sorta about food)

    Asia:
    David Bowie – China Girl
    Graham Parker – Discovering Japan
    Joe Jackson – Chinatown
    Roxy Music – India
    The Vapors – Turning Japanese
    Romeo Void – Chinatown

That’s just a few with a few examples off the top of my head. There are lots of other possible themes:
    Memphis
    Georgia
    Cheating Men/Women
    I’m Leaving You
    Come Back Baby
    Cars
    Hot Rods/Racing
    ……

  2. How about superstar duets?

Patti LaBelle/Michael MacDonald — On My Own
    Queen/David Bowie — Under Pressure
Kenny Rogers/Dolly Parton — Islands In The Stream
Michael Jackson/Paul McCartney — Ebony And Ivory
Phil Collins/Philip Bailey — Easy Lover

  3. If I follow correctly, the Midnight Special features an artist, while the Saturday Hootenanny features a theme. There are a few British bands that are/were big in the UK that didn’t quite get hit it in the US, like Status Quo, Stone Roses, or The Jam. There are also some bands that are local favorites that might not be as well know nationally. (Dropkick Murphys are pretty much the house band of Boston, though not exactly a top 40 staple nationwide.) It would probably be difficult to get a full 20 song set from most local favorites though.

  4. Haven’t seen one with KISS. Janis Joplin has enough material recorded, Linda Rondstat would be good if she sang with no politics. Blues Brothers comes to mind as a stack o wax to view and they were actually fairly talented.

  5. Hmm… how about an evening of Genesis and their assorted spinoffs? Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, Mike + The Mechanics, Tony Banks, Steve Hackett… that could be a fun mix. (It is whenever I do it for my own entertainment.)

Personally, I’d recommend “Mama” for the Genesis selections, but I double-dog-dare you to post “Illegal Alien.” In today’s climate, that could get a whole bunch of hippies’ heads to explode.

  6. For Midnight Special:
    Yes
    Asia
    Genesis
Joe Walsh (“the most talented goofball in rock and roll”)

    For Hootenanny:
    Misunderstood Meanings of 70s Songs

Videos that completely miss the point of the song they’re promoting

    Please and thank you.
