I thought I saw an article somewhere that said Venus was probably a lot more inhabitable recently than it is now. I think they said as recently as 700,000 years ago but I may be wrong on that figure. Damn I wish I had the link. What they say happened was a large meteor strike released massive amounts of carbon dioxide into the air as well as other greenhouse gases which started the planet along the path to what we see today.
