Large Amounts of Sedentary Time Linked With Higher Risk of Dementia in Older Adults, Study Shows
Medical Xpress / University of Southern California / JAMA | Sept. 12, 2023 | Raichlen et alTheir study showed the risk of dementia significantly increases among adults who spend over 10 hours a day engaging in sedentary behaviors like sitting—a notable finding considering the average American is sedentary for about 9.5 hours each day.
Adults aged 60 and older who spend more time engaging in sedentary behaviors like sitting while watching TV or driving may be at increased risk of developing dementia, according to a new study.
The study also revealed the way sedentary behavior is accumulated over the course of the day didn’t matter as much as the total time spent sedentary each day.
It seems to me that either the scientists or the reporter do not understand the meaning of the word “accumulated.”
Also, I’ve never heard of the act of driving described as being “sedentary” before.

Biden: “Only time I’m ever sedentary man is when I’m on the john 4 hours a day.”
I read the linked article, not the original study, and no where does it mention how much the “Increased risk” was. 10%, 1000%? who knows. And what is the standard risk of dementia for the baseline. 1 in 10, 1 in 1000? How can you evaluate this startling claim without context.
Exactly and I like soup…
Welp, I’m done for. At least when I say this job is rotting my brain, I have some evidence (well close enough) to back me up.
