According to reports, Microsoft will unveil its new restructuring on Thursday.
The one-time tech leader is looking to change its form into something better suited to today’s environment. But just what will those changes entail?
I’m thinking they’ll split into two major division: Stuff That Works and Stuff That’s Crap.
The Stuff That Works will continue to support the Xbox 360, the Microsoft Mouse, Microsoft Surface Pro, and Microsoft Security Essentials.
The Stuff That’s Crap division will encompass Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Surface RT, Xbox One, and just about everything else.
Products and services like Microsoft office, which are currently slated for the Stuff That’s Crap division could wind up in Stuff That Works, but that’s still uncertain.
Now, will Microsoft really do this? Well, they already have. At least, that’s how I’ve thought of there stuff for years. On Thursday, they have the chance to make it official.
Will they? Probably not.
Will the restructuring work? Are you kidding? The people that brought you Clippy, Microsoft Bob, the Zune, and the Ken? What could possibly go wrong?

Keep SQL Server…I like my job.
Clippy is going to be recycled as Clippay. The difference? Irony.
Windows sucks compared to what exactly? OSX is total Nazi Apple crap, Linux is a joke…. Ill keep my Win7 for awhile thank you…
Today at work, my Windows computer suddenly went dark and rebooted. That’s unusual. Most days, it just hangs up for a bit.
I’ve used Windows since 2.03 (1988). I thought that computers simply acted goofy.
When Vista came out a few months before I planned to replace my laptop, I replaced it with OS X Tiger (10.4) on my new MacBook. I’ve since replaced that with a MacBook Pro, and currently run Mountain Lion (10.8).
I’ve also run Linux, but it felt like a beta release program, never a final release. I haven’t used it in about a year.
So, who says? The guy who has used Windows since 1988.
@3 – I’m still a VERY happy Win XP user. To paraphrase Spock, it may be like constructing a mnemonic memory circuit using stone knives and bearskins, but it’ll still prove that Edith Keeler must die.
You know, Harvey, when the occasion arises to launch Windows on my computer (yes, Macs run Windows), I usually boot to XP (Windows 5.1) instead of Windows 7 (actually 6.1) because XP usually lets me do exactly what I need to do.
Of course, when I’m done, I go back to drinking my Apple-flavored Kool-Aid.
I programmed Macs for 4 years while in college (’93-’97), swore to never touch another Apple product again after having to deal with how Apple treats the ‘not anointed’ programmer. And yes, I know the OS has changed, but the Apple Attitude(tm) is still in full swing I’m told.
As for Linux, I hate that a Unix based OS managed to drown out any chance of an open source OS that isn’t stuck in a 1970’s based paradigm.
As for crap, I use my Surface RT far more than I expected, and far more than my friend uses his iPad.
I nominate Windoze 8 for the crap pile.
Buying Windoze 8 made me buy a copy of 7 ultimate to install over the abject failure of Windoze to make something that worked. It was that or take a 20lb sledge to the new computer and put it out of its software dystrophy misery.
Don’t kid yourself. This reorganization is over 8 pissing off every PC user all at once.
I agree with Marc. I can get a fully functional database-driven website set up using SQL Server and Visual Studio in less than half the time it takes to do the same thing using other technology. SQL Server has a lot of good features I can’t find in Oracle or other RDMS.
Also, my Windows 7 system has much more of the (working) drivers I use and crashes less often than my Linux system on the same machine.
