Lasciate ogne speranza, voi ch’intrate

It has begun. The descent into … the race for the Republican nomination for president.

So far, the big noise-makers are a birther and a truther. Then there’s the big government, pseudo-conservative former governors. You got a couple of quitters in the mix…

Let’s look at this motley crew. And then I’ll tell you about the current glimmer of hope I have.

First, the motleys…

Ron Paul. Or, more correctly: RON PAUL!!!!!1!!!11!!!!! Yes, he’s running again.

He’s the GOP’s Obama. Got a lot of fired-up nutcases supporting him. And he believes some really scary stuff. Sure, he’s sound on fiscal policy, but that whole truther business… Simply put, Ron Paul is nuts. As are his supporters.

Donald Trump. No, I really don’t believe he’s running for president. I think he’s promoting a TV show. Or, at least, it started out that way. But, he’s tying himself to the birther movement.

Let me state that I don’t believe Obama is qualified to be president. Not because of where he was born, but because he is an unqualified oaf. After over two years on the job, he still has no clue. But, he does meet the Constitutional requirements:

No Person except a natural born Citizen … shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any Person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States.

But still, I’ve seen trees that would do a better job as president than Obama.

But we’re supposed to be talking about Trump. And that’s the problem. We’re talking about Trump. He should be ignored, and he’ll go away and play a tycoon on TV. Which is the perfect job for him.

Mitt Romney and Chris Christie could be described the same way: conservative for their states, but way too left-wing for my tastes. Like the scene in Hall Pass where the guys see a hot chick, only to discover that, once she’s seen apart from her ugly companions, she’s not so hot. That’s Romney and Christie. And we don’t need no Hall Pass Conservative.

Newt Gingrich did some good things as Speaker of the House. And he is sound in many, many ways. But there are a couple of things that bother me. While I understand why he did it, his resigning from Congress isn’t a good thing.

Same thing about Palin. She bailed on the job as governor. I understand why she did it. But that still bothers me.

I’m not so much worried about her experience. I seem to recall the left all up in arms over her experience in 2008. The same left that helped elect the even more unqualified Barack Obama. While Palin isn’t the most experienced candidate, she’s far, far more qualified for president than Obama.

Tim Pawlenty might be a good choice. Best of the lot I’ve mentioned so far. I know that doesn’t sound like much of an endorsement. But I do like the guy. He’s one of my top three.

The thing is, I don’t know enough about him to know if he’s a true conservative. His state elected Al Franken, so, yeah, he’s going to look conservative by comparison. I just don’t know. Christie and Romney, I know enough about, and they ain’t really conservatives. I want to know more about Pawlenty. If he’s the real deal, I could support him.

One of my favorites I actually know something about, a true conservative governor, has decided not to run. Haley Barbour said “no” to 2012.

Another favorite, Herman Cain, is a long-shot, but is running. I’m not so much worried about long-shots as I am getting the right man for the job.

Cain has business experience, and a long track record of success. We need somebody like Herman Cain. So, why not get the real Herman Cain?

Despite the glimmer of hope I have in Cain (and maybe Pawlenty) I’m worried. Right now, the focus is on Trump and RON PAUL!!1!!!11!

I’m worried that the GOP is going to nominate someone who isn’t a conservative, and we end up with a choice between a left-wing nutcase, and a not-quite-as-left-wing not-quite-as-nuts Republican.

In other words, I’m worried we’re going to do 2008 all over again.

An Explanation of My Blogging

Someone commented this on a recent post and it kind of stung:

You already used the “smashing a kid’s toy” analogy about repealing Obamacare. More originality, please.

Yes, when I wrote it I knew I was repeating myself, but I just didn’t have any time to come up with a new analogy and it seemed apropos. Still, I’m a bit sensitive on my posting quality because I can’t really put the time time into blog posting on IMAO that I’d like to. With a full time job and now daddy duties, I really can’t devote more than an hour in the morning to blogging, so I try to do the best with that I can. That’s why I like doing the occasional longer piece for Pajamas Media, because when I get paid directly for a piece it’s a lot easier to justify devoting more time to it — though lately I’ve had trouble even finding time for that. Plus, a passion of mine even before becoming a blogger was to be a novelist, and I’m working to finally get one done and submit it (if some of you read Superego when I did that piece by piece on this blog, I’ve been reworking that into a full novel — there’s only a few sentence left from the original). So, any free writing time I can find, I really want to devote to that.

Anyway, all I’m saying is it’s hard, but I still do my best to blog every day. It’s not always up to my quality standards, but hey, it’s free and it’s there. And I hope to keep doing this until I repeat myself not out of laziness, but senility.

Burning Marshmallow

Here’s some videos I thought I’d share. This first one is by Mary Katharine Ham, and it’s the last two years in Peeps:

That really makes me want to see what happens when you set some Peeps on fire.

This other video is from Andrew Klavan on how to behave during an Islamic massacre:

That really makes me want to see what happens when you set some Peeps on fire.

The Left’s Problem with Trig

It’s pretty shocking the way some of the left seem unable to separate politics from basic humanity and thus we saw the spectacle of Wonkette attacking Trig Palin, but something we also have to recognize is how much Trig scares the left.

This was something I noticed right away when Sarah Palin came on the scene. One of the few things known about her early on was that she brought a Down Syndrome child to term, and you could see the panic in the left. This wasn’t just someone whose rhetoric clashed with them on abortion; this was someone who’s action was a condemnation of the policy they support that results in 90% of children like Trig being aborted. A lie the left like to tell themselves is that all conservatives are hypocrites and would make the same craven choices in the same situation, but they couldn’t tell themselves that with Palin. That’s probably why the Trig trutherism soon appeared out of desperation.

There’s no greater refutation of abortion than an alive child, and thus Palin holding Trig and smiling is almost like a direct assault to the left. And it’s not so much that they fear other people being convinced on abortion as they fear themselves being moved. Who wants to come to terms with how horrible the policy is they’ve enthusiastically supported? That’s why they like the term “choice” instead of saying “abortion”; they never want to stare it directly in the face for fear of what they’d see. But, again, the mere existence of Trig leaves them no avenue on this. And that’s why there is so much ire directed at Trig. It’s not misdirected from Sarah Palin; it’s target is Trig because he did the greatest offense by existing.

Random Thoughts

I heard a kid was thrown out of school on Earth Day for wearing a shirt with a Mars flag on it.

Doesn’t celebrating the planet we just happened to be born on seem a little mindlessly jingoistic?

Earth Day Tip: Properly dispose of batteries by sealing them in a box labeled “NOT BATTERIES” before tossing them in the trash.

Earth Day Tip: Many species are now endangered, which means they have nothing to lose and are extremely dangerous. Kill on sight.

Everyone talks about making the earth green, but shouldn’t it, by definition, be in earth tones?

Earth Day Tip: Do what you can to protect earth’s most precious resource: Gold.

Do comic book superheroes believe in Jesus? Because people coming back to life is almost a mundane occurrence for them.

Superhero deaths are like celebrity marriages – it’s rare they last more than a year or two.

How has Hollywood not done another Gremlins sequel or remake by now? I mean, Gizmo dolls gotta be a cash cow.

There’s this new lawsuit alleging that soylent green is only 35% people.

Kia is Korean for “Hyundai”.

“Press * to repeat the menu options. If you have a rotary phone, then we don’t even want your call, you @#%& hipster.”

My favorite part of Portal 2 is how you can make portals between two places. No, wait, it’s GLaDOS.

Luckily, No One in the GOP Field Excites People

There’s been a big deal made about how weak the GOP field is for president and how no one is particularly exciting people right now. Is that actually important at all?

I mean, how do you think the 2012 election is going to play out? “Wow! We sure love Obama! The Republican candidate better be exciting if he wants us to vote for him.” Obama is just sucking it up to an epic degree, and the 2012 elections are going to be referendum how horrible he is. You don’t need an exciting candidate, you just need some other guy. And if he’s boring, all the better. After the hope and change catastrophe, people are just going to want someone semi-competent and predictable. Right now, Obama is exciting people the way a car with its brakes cut excites people. So it doesn’t matter if the alternative is boring. What would people choose if given the choice between a Ferrari that’s on fire and careening out of control or a nice, safe, boring Toyota Camry?

You really just can’t underestimate how Obama’s suckiness is going to factor into the election. Any good campaign strategy is just going to remind people over and over just how horrible Obama has been, and then at the end point to the Republican candidate — doesn’t matter who he is — and say, “This guy is not Obama, so it’s pretty unlikely he’ll be that awful.” Frankly, I think one of the best candidates right now is Tim Pawlenty. I don’t anything about him other than that he’s really boring, and that’s what we need right now. Because what is exciting? Spending bills bigger than imagination is exciting. A takeover of health care no one wanted is exciting. Debt spiraling out of control is exciting. An economy teetering on the edge is exciting. I think people are really ready for boring now.

Brave Comedy Making Fun of a Helpless Kid

New Crowder video on Wonkette and Louis C.K. going after Trig Palin:

There is a big difference between wit and shock humor. Wit is timeless humor, but it is also quite hard to formulate. On the other hand shock humor takes little intelligence and just relies on throwing out standards — it’s a pretty standard staple of young boys who like to go after taboos and laugh at farting and such. But you might notice you don’t laugh at the same things you did when you were a little kid as shock humor wears out pretty quickly and the more you hear it the less shocking it is. And then you need to push the boundary further to be shocking again. Anyone can do it, all it requires, as Crowder says, is just giving up on human decency and their’s no limit to how much you can keep on shocking people. Though eventually that act itself will get tiresome.

Earth Day, a rerun (mostly)

Well, it’s Earth Day. Whoop-de-frikkin’-do. I was thinking about cutting down some trees and burning some tires to celebrate. But, that’d be a lot of work. And I’m tired.

In fact, I’m not going to even write a post about it. Instead, I’m going to find an old post and run it.

I will change it around a little bit, though. Instead of my traditional picture I’ve used for a while — me as a toddler, circa 1960 — I’ll change it to that more recent photo I’ve started using. Since all the baby pictures around here should properly be of the real boss of IMAO, Buttercup.

Oh, and while I’m at it, I’ll use a different picture for our friend from Mars.

And I’ll fix a link that has since been taken down.

Well, heck. It would have been easier to write a whole new post. But, that’s how things go. You start out with something simple, then start messing with it, and it becomes more work than you’re saving.

There’s a life lesson in there, if I can just figure out what it is.

Anyway, here’s that rerun (mostly) of an Earth Day post from a couple of years back.

Hello, world. It’s Earth Day.

Let’s talk a little bit about Earth Day, its history, and why it’s important to…

You’re a racist.

Let’s Have a Fond Recounting of How Much You Lost By

So Kloppy-burger is asking for a recount in Wisconsin. Seems rather pointless. I mean, she was quick to declare victory with a 200 vote margin which was recount worthy (though I wouldn’t have been too hopeful for Prosser), but now a 7,000 vote margin is suspect? I don’t think a lot of people understood how statistically unlikely it was that the couple hundred vote margin Bush won by would be overturned by a recount, but thinking there could be a miscount somewhere to the order of thousands of votes is just insane. She isn’t asking for a recount; she’s charging fraud or just wasting everyone’s time. So show the fraud, or stop wasting everyone’s time. Only stupid people could think there is any point to this (hey, look — here’s a Kos post on it to raise money).

This usually inconsequential judicial election became the last gasp of unions, and I think they’re just having a really hard time dealing with the fact that it’s over for them. They’re done. Might as well figure out what museum they want to donate their dinosaur bones to. And it was kind of mean how that election played out in that they thought they won and then — POW! — here’s 7,000 more votes. It’s like instead of just not getting a kid the toy he wanted, you get it for him, let him open it up and admire it, and then smash it in front of him. That’s always hilarious.

Well, look at a recount this way: It will be yet another opportunity to mock them for losing.

Don’t Let Your Partisanship Become a Mental Illness

It’s kind of pointless to satire political extremists if you can’t find any target more vile than yourself.

So Wonkette mocks Trig Palin, and maybe it’s just a case of moronic partisan hatred getting temporarily out of hand, but then the editor for the site tries to defend it. In the fantasy world they’ve constructed, Sarah Palin is constantly using Trig as a prop and that’s what they’re outraged by. Of course, if she wasn’t ever publicly seen with Trig, you know they’d say she was ashamed of him. See, about 95% of everything the professional left these days screams about is just partisan BS, and when you see people act like utter sociopaths like the people at Wonkette, you start to wonder if they have any real human beliefs at all.

No joke, when partisan hatred gets you to the level of the people at Wonkette, you’ve gone from politically active to having a mental illness. They have a divorce from reality (see how much trouble they have at even understanding the outrage) and delusions (the whole made up belief there is some “cult of Trig” and Ken Layne lashing out at Tommy Christopher thinking someone must have put him up to being outraged) and are cut off from normal human emotions (you know, the sort of thing that would tell you, “Hey, maybe because I don’t like someone’s politics isn’t a good reason to attack their child with Down syndrome.”). Are any political views they hold — supporting abortion, wanting more taxes — really worth becoming this twisted?

And you shouldn’t just look at the left. It can easily happen to the right just as well. I try not to write out of anger myself, because the one thing to remember about politics is it is mainly just nonsense. It’s a silly faux-conflict we’ve been engaged in for centuries, and we will continue to go around in these circles for centuries more. That’s why the thing most worth making fun of in politics is the pomposity of it all. The sort of pomposity that makes you think you’re righteous mocking a defenseless little child.

Random Thoughts

Seeing a group of lefties make fun of Trig Palin is too pitiful and sad a spectacle to make me angry. Those people need help.

You shouldn’t let your partisan views take you over to the point you become a sociopath.

It’s nice how Outsourced has that character Gupta they can turn to whenever they need to bring any momentum to a screeching halt.

Do people really not understand why Bristol Palin is a spokeswoman for celibacy when she wasn’t celibate? This isn’t a hard concept.

Fire in the Belly

Fred Thompson has a column out setting the record straight about his 2008 presidential run. The media has its narrative about him being a dark horse candidate with no fire in the belly, and then we ended up with… McCain. Did he have fire in the belly? At times, it seemed like McCain didn’t even want to win against Obama. And now look where we are.

That’s why you have to fight back against the media. For one, IMAO did it’s best to make sure the real facts about Fred Thompson were out there. And to counteract the fire in the belly charge, Fred Thompson punched one reporter so hard his head exploded. Of course, the other reporters were like, “Well, why didn’t he punch that reporter so hard his limbs exploded too? I guess his heart isn’t really into it.” And once again, that lead to us getting McCain. It’s like we Republicans didn’t even want to win the presidency.

So, we have to take charge of the media narrative this time, because we can’t have a repeat of 2008. We have to be in it to win it, because I’m not sure the country can take another four years of Obama. We might all end up on the side of some road in Europe selling pencils to get by. Hey, maybe Fred Thompson could run again. He better start by punching two reporters so hard their heads explode.
