It refers to them painting their faces…..RED and since Indians are Asian, a slur might be calling them….yellowskins…I guess. That’s assuming you spend your time deciding what is and isn’t offennnnnsive to other people. Indians don’t think it’s a slur but liberals don’t care what they think.
Also it should be noted that the government officially got permission from the various tribes to use those names. Not that I think Redskins is a bad name, but the argument in this post is bogus for that reason.
Two of my friends here in Massachusetts are from the Wampanoag tribe. That’s the tribe that broke bread with the Pilgrims for the first Thanksgiving a generation before relations turned sour. They know the whole story about how the football franchise got its name, but they still feel that the redskins name is offensive because it is associated with the practice dating back to 1755 of paying bounties for killing Native Americans. The colonial government paid 50 pounds for scalps of males over 12 years, 25 pounds for scalps of women over 12, and 20 pounds for scalps of boys and girls under 12. Twenty-five British pounds sterling in 1755, worth around $9,000 today —a small fortune in those days when an English teacher earned 60 pounds a year.

Walter “Blackie” Wetzel, a political leader for the Blackfeet Nation is the one who came up with the Indian chief logo, and he says he’s proud of his work.
The current logo, proposed by Walter Wetzel, a former Blackfeet tribal chairman and president of the National Congress of American Indians, was introduced in 1972 and is modeled after the likeness on the Buffalo nickel. Members of the Blackfeet tribe today express a range of opinions, from support to indifference to strong opposition to the Redskins name based upon their personal experiences.

That’s weak. The only slur is ‘Redskins’. The other names are not derogatory names.
