Friday Night Open Thread

I’ve been enjoying watching Star Trek Continues. I hope you have, too. Have you been watching it? Or have I just been posting the videos here for no good reason? I’m thinking for some of you, the latter. Oh, well. I enjoy it.

Ok, with that comment, you shamed me into watching this episode. And then I watched the others.

I’ve never enjoyed pastiches in the past. I’ve had bad experiences with all Sherlock Holmes tributes (except “The Seven Percent Solution”) and an even worse experience with one homage I read to P. G. Wodehouse. No one ever has the touch of the original. No matter how big a fan, no one will ever be another Shakespeare.

But this series breaks the mold. In return for a forgivable suspension of disbelief (since the actors aren’t the actors you’re familiar with — which, after all, you knew going into it), the production values capture any of that lost ground. The characterizations are perfect, as are the pacing, the timing, the direction, the lighting, the costumes, the music, the props, the makeup, the dialog, the storylines, the special effects — every detail.

You look for errors and don’t find them.

The best praise I can give is: it gives the viewer the exact feeling they had when watching an episode of the original series for the first time. Surely that is what the producers were aiming for.. All I can say is “job well done.”
