Thus Spoke Zoroaster

The introduction of Also Sprach Zarathustra, the composition by Richard Strauss, was used as part of the opening of Stanley Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey”. There’s actually more to that composition. About 58 more minutes than most people usually have heard. You might not have time for it now, but here it is, just in case.

The first performance of Also Sprach Zarathustra was on November 27, 1896, in case you were wondering what brought this up. Now you know.

    Talk about a well-rounded guy!

I mean, I don’t think his philosophy was very impressive but it sure translated to the football field and orchestrals!

  2. Here’s my mildly amusing 2001 story: While attending college, I decide to watch a late-night showing of the film at a local theater. A few minutes (or was it hours–hard to tell) into the movie, during a scene in which one of the ape-men sits and gnaws delightfully on the severed leg of a freshly-killed zebra, the projectionist decides it’s a good time to beam a message on the corner of the screen, “Lobby closes in 10 minutes.”
