Initial thought – lots of glissando and pitch-bending… mostly electronic, but some with just strings. Can’t come up with anything else obvious to connect Edgar Winter and Lawrence Welk!
I think you’ve got it, Bob. All instrumentals that made it to number 1 on the Billboard charts. Some of the older ones were referred to by the owner of an Easy Listening station I used to work at, as “insipid instrumentals.”
The Frankenstein video also brought back memories. I used to have an ARP 2600 synthesizer with a similar keyboard to the one that Edgar Winter carried and played in the video. At 50 lbs., that sucker weighed almost as much as the synth itself! When I was a callow fellow, and in incredible physical shape, late one night I managed to carry the synth and keyboard a few miles from a bus station, up a hill to where I worked, in the North Coast Redwoods. I did have to set it down a few times.
