There was another Republican debate last night, but this one I haven’t bother reading the reactions to. Who cares anymore? Plus, who doesn’t know all about the candidates by this point? I’m guessing all you blog readers know them pretty well, but apparently there are a number of primary voters who were too busy licking the paint on the walls to do much studying about the candidates.
I think the only way I could get interested in the primary process again is if I had money riding on it.

…or maybe, if we actually had a conservative candidate.
“I think the only way I could get interested in the primary process again is if I had money riding on it.”
Um … in a sense you do. Maybe not directly, but in the long term, we all do.
Yeah, point to #2 — McCain is going to control where you can spend your money (e.g. not endorsing a favored political candidate) and Huckabee is going to give it all to cuddly, fuzzy little illegal immigrants. Of course, since you already know that, there’s still not much point to actually watching the debate.
RON PAUL WON! HE WAS DEBATE WINNER! HE ALSO WON SILVER IN LOUISIANI! HE WILL RAISE EVEN MORE MONEY NOW!! IZ AWESOME!
I’m with Mike Reagan.
Newt needs to get in this race.
People who don’t support Ron Paul can go suck it!
Newt needs to get in this race.
no. newt is pewt. he he he he he
I’d have loved for Newt to get in about 6 months ago, but I’m a little nervous now since he seems to have been drinking the Goracle cool-aid recently in regards to global warming.
Oh, well, I guess if that’s the only thing I don’t think he’s conservative on anymore, I can live with that.
Newt’s not really drinking the Kool-Aid. I read his book, Contract With the Earth. Yeah, I’m the one. Anyway, I think his point is that the Republicans and conservatives have given the ecological fight to the environmentalists. The ecological issues are shared by all. The environmentalists are leftist wackos.
His point in the book is that the Right should look to tap into the spirit of the free market and employ those principles toward ecological goals. Envirals (the Leftist wackos) see only government solutions and heavy regulation as the answer. Newt’s idea is that those folks and those ideas have never worked well and the energy and ingenuity of the free market and those that know the strengths of the market can fashion better solutions.
That said, Newt’s been on the anti-partisanship wagon for some time. He developed a platform based on a wide ranging survey. So, he pushes it. My problem is that I think he confuses the role of Representative with the role of a leader. A representative should closely examine the values of his constituents and look to be their voice. A leader must be able to say unpopular things that don’t poll well because they are the right thing to say and because they are based on principle.
He’s trying to take a platform that would make a good US Representative to the national stage as a presidential platform. That dog don’t hunt.
I like and respect Newt. If I were president, I’d beg him to be my Chief of Staff or find a new legislative liaison position for him to fill to get my ideas to the House and through the House. I wouldn’t want his for president, though, until he gets the popularity contest stuff behind him.

iz wize idea of newt. guess he nah so poot afta all
Draft Cheney!!!!
I really wish the IMAO Podcast was still here to guide us throught this so I wouldn’t have to do so much readin’
It looks more and more like this race will probably come down to McCain and Romney. I’m a Huckabee supporter, but it is clear the GOP isn’t ready for his brand of populism yet. (It probably will be by 2012, after 4 years of Hillary.)
with McCain, you have all the things he’s done to make conservatives mad to the point of McCain Derangement Syndrome. My concern about him is that he does whacky things when under pressure. I remember his 2000 run, with his rant on Mike Reagan’s show, his comparing himself to Luke Skywalker, his calling the leaders of the religious right “forces of intolerance”.
The alternative is Romney, and frankly, Romney scares me more. I don’t think the GOP should be engaging in a tolerance expirament to see how many Americans are creeped out by Mormons.
My guess is that after Rudy places third in Florida, his run is pretty much over with. You can’t say, “I have to win this state” and then come in a distant third. Whether he’ll have the good grace to bow out is another matter.
We have 2 jobs as rightys.
Defeating the libs in the GOP.
Defeating the libs in the general election.
Conservatism is so powerful that we dont need
to win all the time. Even the fumes last for years. Reagans legacy still making things better
and in Britain Thatchers legacy doing the same.
The class of folks who supported Fred including you made me proud. We shall be there when needed
and we shall win again:)
A bit more than two jobs, perhaps, Mike. I think Peggy Noonan is right (WSJ Article). The Republican Party is broken. To the majority of Americans, “Republicanism” now means: George Bush, $3.50 gasoline, the war in Iraq, government deficits, Halliburton rip-offs, corporate scandals, anal toe-tapping Senators, etc. If history is any guide, things are going to have to get a lot worse before Americans buy a new definition of what Republic…ans are all about.
I’m thinking…by 2012.
The Republican party needs to get it’s ass handed to it in this election so that it can wake up and become the party of Ronald Reagan again instead of the party of George Bush, Lindsay Grahm and John McCain!
In the meantime, ussjc, outfit your sub with survival gear. You just might need a hiding place from Hillary. Always a pleasure…
I shuddered at those three names you mentioned…

You’d think 2006 would’ve done it.
yup GOP EQUALZ “George Bush, $3.50 gasoline, the war in Iraq, government deficits, Halliburton rip-offs, corporate scandals, anal toe-tapping Senators, etc.”
jimmy iz smrt
No, you see, Wrrrr (four r’s? – that makes you VERY r-r-r-right wing!), all of that IS NOT what Republicans stand for. Wake up and smell the coffee/principles, Wrrr person. 🙂
Jimmy, my sub is so named as to fly under the radar of “herself” and their ilk… We are going to stock up on supplies and head north where we will submerge under the ice-pack for the next 4 years. Hopefully this will put us out of the reach of the evil shrew…but if she finds us and wants a fight before the 4 years is up, we plan to be heavily defended…
2forPaul,
As a Libertarian, I don’t disagree with Paul on many of his positions, but he is no executive. Harry Browne, there was your executive, but being deceased, he is hardly a viable candidate.
I would love to see Fred! win a few states on Stupor Tuesday, by write in votes, or due to ballots being printed prior to his withdrawal.
There is still hope for Wrrrr.
I received a reply to a post that I forwarded to a staunch Democratic family member of mine. (“Thunder Thighs Gets Black Endorsement” from the ‘Grouchy Old Cripple’ site)
The following is proof that monkey faces CAN be converted (if only temporarily… there’s hope…)
From a genuine Monkey Face:
“I just wanted to tell you something I heard on the news personally, that left my mouth hanging wide open in disbelief. This was like yesterday evening or evening before. They were talking about the tax rebates that the president is pushing. Hey, I’m all for getting a tax rebate. ‘Go President’ as far as I’m concerned. Well, they were talking to a Democrat- and I don’t remember exactly who he was…some white haired senator or congressman – I didn’t care what he had to say until I heard him say this. He was dead against the tax rebates and the president’s plan to give tax rebates to stimulate the economy. He said it was WRONG to give people tax rebates because it was wrong to give people money that they didn’t work for. He said that it was not money earned but a giveaway. Can you believe a DEMOCRAT said that? So now, let me get this straight, it is OK for the Democrats to take the money, that I worked hard to earn, out of my pocket and hand it over to millions of non-working (and non-attempting) Americans and illegal immigrants….but it is wrong for me to get a tax rebate to stimulate the economy because I didn’t earn it?
P.S. Please don’t share my political views (email) with others.”
Strnj1,
I think the grey-haired guy might’ve been talking about the lower income folks. The Bush tax cuts removed millions from the federal tax roles. Those folks, even though they aren’t paying federal income tax, will get some of the handout cash. At least, I’m fairly certain that’s how the deal is shaped.
The pre-bate idea is just a terrible idea. It’s shifting focus from what the nation needs to what the nation wants. Hopefully, the plan will have significant business incentives.
Precisely my point (you notice they weren’t paying attention to anything else he said until he mentioned the possibility of not getting the money…)
That’ll teach me not to read to the very end.
Fred Thompson stood head and shoulders above all the other presidential candidates. Pathetically, with him out of the race, it is now necessary to support the remaining campaigner who is the least unacceptable.
So Mitt Romney is now the one. I suppose I can get over him being a reformed ultra-liberal. I suppose I can get over his support for universal healthcare. I suppose I can get over his support for citizenship for illegal immigrants already here.
Mike Huckabee wants to cap troop levels; supports amnesty AND citizenship for illegal immigrants already here; is a big spender and supports increasing the minimum wage; supports a cap/reduction of “global warming” emissions; opposes school vouchers.
John McCain and Rudy Juliani are straight out “RINOs”.
Ron Paul is a political quack and a dangerous utopian “non-interventionist”.
Regardless, I will pull the lever for whichever candidate the pachyderms post, as a much lesser evil to the prospect of a sociocrat POTUS. The worst possible scenario, perish the thought, is the Clintons being back in the white house!
Well said, compugor. But the real gamble is that Romney, inspite of being an expedient, consensus politician cut right from the Democrat mold, also has some private conservative leanings that would guide his Presidency. Because, if he doesn’t, we’d just be electing a Democrat in Republican clothing. Seems to me we did that with Bush.
utrejch4 is an phony & a fool from the inferior Czech republic. But thanks for playing, cocksucker.
