Should Our Video Game Actions Count Against Us in Elections?

In a state senate election in Maine, some people are trying to disqualify a woman from office for what she does in World of Warcraft. Does what we do in video games count against us for political office? Because I have done some terrible things in video games. I mean, in Ultima VII, I once went village to village slaughtering everyone just because I was bored. And I’ve done enough things in ten minutes of Grand Theft Auto to disqualify from like eighty elections. Of course, I’ve also killed like a billion Nazis and saved Hyrule a dozen times. So, you could look at what I do in video games and decide I’m like the greatest person ever and should be king. I’d love to be king, because then I could spend all day playing video games and no one could complain. You’ve seen what I’ve done to my city in Sim City when I tired of it; don’t make me angry so I do that to you.

  1. She is a self-proclaimed Democrat and a social worker. Isn’t that enough to disqualify her from office?

And Frank, what you should really worry about is your achievements (or lack thereof) in Leisure Suit Larry.

  2. Included in Obama’s composite girlfriend was an episode when he had an ongoing and intimate relationship with Ms Pac-Man and he turned out all right didn’t he? OK, maybe not, but Ms Pac-Man would do things Michelle just wouldn’t.

  3. Shoot, just my Morrowind character would probably put me in jail of hundreds of years. I don’t think the American public would approve of my killing random homeowners in Seyda Neen (never murder, always self defense: is it my fault I would taunt them dozens of times until they decide to kill me?) just so I could put my stuff in their crates. Or running around with just boots on. Or stripping all corpses, leaving their usually worthless clothes and armor folded neatly next to the stiffs. It takes a lot to overcome that kind of stuff in the public eye, and I don’t think saving the world three times would do it.

  4. She’s Horde. Obviously that disqualifies her, especially since Warchief Garrosh is such a bloody-minded savage. Has she repudiated the unchecked agression in Kalimdor and the destruction of Theramore with a giant mana-bomb? Using a mana-bomb on Theramore is an obscene atrocity in any world. Of course it disqualifies her.

  5. First: what people do in games…it’s a friggin game! Who cares?

Second: I don’t know much about WoW, because I avoided playing it. But if she plays a rogue…she steals things. Why is anyone surprised she does that in a fake world? She is a Democrat. That is what they do in the real world too. And she is a politician…backstabbers, the lot of them.

    So…this is a non-issue.

  6. In reality, what she does in video games shouldn’t have any effect on how people see her. The fact that instead of screaming at her co-workers or hitting her boss or kicking her dog or any number of violent things, she kills monsters and bad guys should be a relief to those around her. She’s working out her aggression in a way that doesn’t hurt anyone. So much better then trying to self sooth with drugs or drinking. Should we disqualify people who race horses or cars, people who box or do karate, people who rappel or parachute (although why anyone would jump out of a perfectly good plane is beyond me.)

What someone does for entertainment in their spare time is up to them. They can be as rude, competitive and obnoxious as they like while playing a game (have you seen people playing paintball?) as long as they are civil in their interactions with people elsewhere. That she chooses to play an Orc is somewhat troubling but to each her own. It might be good if we got the liar in chief interested in video games, he might learn something. After all his golf game isn’t keeping him out of the office enough anymore. We really need to distract him from his stated goal of “transforming America”.
