I just got through reading the page from Batgirl that you linked too. I just love how they are have Batgirl revealing to her room mate the horror of having the Joker shoot her, sexually humiliate her and possibly rape her all of this in front of her father. This leaves her confined to a wheelchair and has to spend a good part of her life coming to terms with it. Then her room mate thinks the moral equivalent to all of that is to reveal that she is transgendered. It is like comparing gay marriage to the civil rights movement of blacks in this country. It was like “Oh I am sorry that all of that horrible stuff happened to you, but hey I am transgendered so that is way worse than what you went through Barbara.”
I’m very glad I did not follow my childhood ambition to write for DC. As it is I have to vomit in my mouth often enough during the workday because of PC horse hockey.
I was never a huge DC fan. Conceptually great heroes for the most part, countered by horrible villains that do nothing to make those heroes look impressive. Then, in the last year, I was talked into playing DC Universe Online with a friend, met a few people in the game, and the few last hopes I had for DC were dashed by the discussions that went on while we played.
Alan Scott, the original Green Lantern, was shoved out as the closet. Not “We’re creating a superhero, oh, he’s gay.” but “we decided to make one of our greatest legends a pandering service.”
Apparently I never knew that Wonder Woman (I’ve always despised her as nothing more than feminist pandering in the first place) has an incredibly stupid weakness. She loses all free will when tied up… by a man.
And of course there’s DC’s undying, misguided, ill-informed, love for all things China. As long as it’s the modern China and only if the Maoists re-wrote their history first. (This coming from a guy who studies Chinese history, the real one, for fun.) Leading to, The “Great Ten”
a Maoist approved and funded Superhero team whose roster includes “The Socialist Red Guardsman” yeah, real hero there…
I think the best actor/actress for this movie (because it doesn’t really matter which gender actor(ess) they get) should be Tilda Swinton. That is one scary looking person man or woman.
