I’ve read about an attempt to build robots that work that way, they would be able to position their parts to take many different shapes and their locomotion is pretty interesting.
The Immortality Option, by James Hogan, has those robots, it’s the sequel to Code of the Lifemaker.
I’ve seen toys similar to this. They function this way because the edges are taped/bound together. The toys I have seen usually have a sticker binding multiple segments together.
Similar to a Jacob’s Ladder toy many kids play with, only on steroids. Likely connected with wire or high strenght monofilament line (fishing line). My guess it that different motions produce tension along differnt axis in the shape, therefore you get the numerous different configurations.
Not sure how it works, unless it’s magnetism.

@8 – Hmmmm… other than a little speculation (“seem to rely on hinges”) that guy doesn’t seem to know, either.
Oddly, even with the close-up shots of the corners, I see nothing to indicate how those “hinges” work.
