No, I have not been using those sayings wrong all my life. Maybe the modern, uneducated, unwashed masses have been saying some of those stupid things, but I have not.
Must be the 40 and under crowd that has been saying it wrong; poor education.

Although I’ve never heard the “on tenterhooks” saying, I’ve never said the other ones incorrectly.
I’ve never heard of “on tenterhooks” before either, but I always use the other 16 correctly.
I must be living in the colloquially correct capital of America because apart from the occasional incorrect use of “could care less”, I don’t hear the butchering of those phrases outlined here.
…unfortunately, it tends to be the same people who say “gubmint check”.
