Tire-d of This

I’m in need of a new set of tires for my car, and I’m dreading this.

Every time I buy a new set of tires, I feel like I walk into the place with the word “sucker” stamped on my forehead, and walk out of the place with an empty wallet and a bad case of buyer’s remorse (coincidentally, sorta like how I’ve felt after every election since 2004)

So… anyone with advice on how to go about buying 4 tires without getting rooked, please chime in.

  1. walmart.com Recently bought highly rated, brand name tires from walmart.com and had them shipped (for free) directly to my local superstore with a tire center. Hundred’s cheaper than anything comparable

  2. Discount Tires will negotiate. At least the two stores near me will. I think my best deal was about $40. off each tire.

I used to hem and haw like I couldn’t afford it (because I couldn’t). Now I just say “I’m sorry I just can’t afford that, is there a better deal?” then they find one.

  3. Full disclosure; I work for a Ford Motor Company Dealer. That being said, Ford does have a “Low Price Guarantee” on their tires (The dealership personnel may, or may not know how to handle that, however). You do need to have another tire price in writing. They always have decent rebates, on top of the guarantee. Ford Credit Card has 6 months no interest. I just bought 4 tires for my wife’s Chrysler 300S (no, does not have to be a Ford product), and even without my employee discount, they were well within local and mail order prices.

  4. If you go to a chain store, look online at the brands available and make your choice based on your mileage. When I was driving 80 miles a day for work I needed tires that could take the punishment. Now I work from home and could go cheap. It’s worth paying more if you put on a lot of miles.

  5. as someone else said: tire rack.com

They have reviews, too. I’ve bought 2 sets of 4 from them, saved money over everyone else, but I was close to one of their warehouses and picked them up myself, and saved the shipping. Then took them to midas for mounting, etc. Midas has a relationship with tire rack, you can order them and ship them directly to midas, who will mount and balance them for $16/tire.
