I remember becoming a cynic at an early age, when I would happen to catch trailers for movies I had already seen — or remembered with disappointment the expectations the trailer had instilled in me. They seldom captured the feel — and in some cases, even the plot — of the actual film.
(Did a big star make a two-minute cameo in the film? You could bet those two minutes were chopped up and sprinkled through the trailer, to make it seem like you’ll be seeing that star throughout the film.)
I felt sorry for the poor suckers who were basing their go/no go decisions on any trailer’s applause-snare — an alternate term for claptrap.
