I remember singing that while marching through the tunnel at Great Lakes!
Ah, Great Lakes Naval Training Center… I remember mornings so cold we had to wear a towel under our ski mask over our mouths so our lips didn’t get frostbit.
Good times, good times.
On the bright side, the food was plentiful, and often quite good.
I spent my twenty years of service in the USAF but did have an opportunity to eat in a Navy mess hall on a couple of occasions while I was based on Okinawa. I was very impressed with the food…as you said plentiful and good.
You failed to experience the food after 2 weeks at sea. In port it was rather good.
I was on a carrier, so they fed us like royalty. Steak and lobster about once a month, plus random pizza or ice cream nights.
Four mess decks, at least one was open 21 hours a day.
