Saturday Night Open Thread

Scott Walker died this week. He was a member of The Walker Brothers, who only had two Top 40 hits in the U.S., although they had many more hits in the U.K.

Scott Walker wasn’t actually Scott Walker. He was Scott Engle. John Walker (who died in 2011) was John Maus. And the other Walker Brother, Gary, who is still living, was Gary Leeds. Kinda like The Statler Brothers, none of whom are named Statler, except the Statler Brothers never used Statler as their individual names. Now I want to play a Statler Brothers song.

But I won’t. I’ll stay on topic. Scott Walker’s passing caused me to recall their biggest hit, which didn’t even hit the Top 10. I liked it though.

  1. Today’s news amusement:

Albuquerque’s Electric Bus Takes a Wrong Turn and Goes Nowhere
The Wall Street Journal | March 29, 2019 | Stephen Ford

In 2016 the city paid $23 million for a fleet of 18 all-electric buses from the Chinese company “Build Your Dreams.” The system for charging the buses’ batteries proved faulty, and city inspectors found problems with the air conditioning, door and braking systems. Most of the buses were deemed unsafe, and Mr. Keller announced in November that the city would return them and instead order 10 old-fashioned buses from an American manufacturer. Those buses won’t arrive until at least 2020.

    . . . [The] price tag, originally $100 million, has ballooned 33%.

Government grand schemers: is there anything they can’t do?

  2. Ever look up thesaurus in a thesaurus? I did(thesaurus.com), but was somewhat disappointed(discontented, disillusioned, unsatisfied). While it listed the definition as “dictionary of synonyms and antonyms” as you would expect, and an alternate definition as, “any dictionary, encyclopedia, or other comprehensive reference book”, “dictionary” was not one of the listed synonyms. Synonyms for thesaurus included words and phrases as generic or ill-fitting in common usage as “glossary”, “vocabulary”, and “word list”; meanwhile, a synonym for dictionary is listed as “thesaurus”. So synonyms for thesaurus skip the most obvious word which is otherwise in it’s definition, but for “dictionary” it is offering the typically more specific “thesaurus” as a synonym. It’s like saying a square is a shape and a rectangle is a square: it’s just…off(substandard, displeasing, unsatisfactory).

  3. The sun ain’t gonna shine anymore. Well at least that solves global warming, which used to be called summer time but CO2 levels rose and it’s real name was Manmade global warming but it was reallly just normal climate change caused by cow farts.
