Small historical quibble: he’s flying a Corsair. Those weren’t introduced until much later in the war.
Aww crap… I done screwed up. The Corsair was produced as early as Fall of ’41.

Rex looks kinda like the G.Gordon Liddy/Nick Fury parody character from the old National Lampoon’s ‘G. Gordon Liddy And His Agents of C.R.E.E.P’

Imperial Wassailier:
The Royal Navy has many, many Corsairs during WWII, Russell. Used for North Sea/Archangel Convoy protection off carriers.
The RN finally developed a way to land the Corsair on a pitching deck and relayed that information to our Navy pilots in and destined for the Pacific.
I’m also guessing that Don Bluth has a lot to do with the short. Artwork looks like it has his prints all over it.

When I was in the navy a monkeysuit meant dress blues or whites. I guess it could also mean a tux.
