If you want some political funneh … well, Frank will be around later. The following is based on a true story.
I was at Harvey’s blog this past weekend and saw that Lonely Island/Michael Bolton/Jack Sparrow video. Sure, you’ve seen it. It’s here, in case you haven’t.
Anyway, that hook … it was driving me nuts. And that’s a point of embarrassment to me. Wife’s cat will explain:
Stupid cat.

You think he’s good with music? You should see him play Name That Tuna!
Oh, sure, DamnCat. Like he can Name That Tuna in one bite.
Ya it was kinda obvious, I pegged it as soon as I heard it, thought it was a cute homage, wonder if they had to get a licensing agreement to do that.
Michael Bolton, huh? Get thee out of my South!!!! You can leave the cat though, since he obviously won the Oh Yeah We’ll See Who Gets Nuetered fight.
I’m telling you – he can not only name the species (yellow fin, blue fin, skipjack…etc.), he can tell an Atlantic bigeye from a Pacific bigeye from an Indian bigeye. The cat’s a freakin’ genius!
Basil you didn’t have to tell us everything. If you had summerized we might still have some respect left for you. ALL the Bolton samples?! And then to be bested by the cat! This reminds me of Sister Betty who I know not to ask how she’s doing lest she tell me everything from 1930 forward. I won’t be asking either of you to testify on Sunday.
I could really go for being “summerized,” Ed. It’s been 10 deg. below normal here for months.
sounds like Basil is more of a Bolton fan than a Sparrow fan. Does anyone buy that you played just samples of all those Bolton songs? “No, I have to listen all the way through it to see if I am missing it!!!11!1!1111!!!!!!” riiiiiiight.
What is a Michael Bolton? Is it related to a Barney Frank?
You say “Stupid cat” but I think you are just prejudiced against Southern accents. 🙂 Actually, Southern cat reminds me of my neighbors’ dog, which is well trained but only responds to commands in Spanish.
Let’s see how smug that cat is when we put scotch tape on the bottoms of its feet.
Ok Jimmy missspelling are not fair game. Unless of coarse its Frank. Online os the only place I type. Voice Dictation Softwear keeps the public school failure of teaching me how to spell a scret. Don’t out me as a bad spellar I am.
Ok, Ed, I wonnt critisise your spellling any more – but I DO like that word “summerized.” You’re right, we already know that Electrical Engineeers can’t spell.
Basil, none of us complimented you on that video but I’ve watched it several times and find the cat a bit contagious (in a good way, I think, even though cat’s mouths are filthy!) and I like your overall composition. How is that done, btw? (i.e., have I missed something recently in web animation development?)
Jimmy is right on the quality, Basil. I was wondering the same things about the source which is miles better looking and sounding than the “Robot Theater” stuff I am used to. Disregard this if you are currently having this information beaten out of you by a MSNBC host.
Hey Jimmy its an Iphone app. You can choose from a talking tom a cat, Santa, robot, T-rex, bird. hedgehog, and hippo. Got them to amuse my son and we all love them.
Do they do other animals besides cats?
My dog Buddy could tell a tale or two… 😉
Bravo Basil!
Actually, the Michael Bolton part (of the video at Harvey’s blog) was way easier for me to listen to than the white-boyz rapping part. (sorry, Harvey.)
Is there a clean, Michael Bolton singing about Captain Jack Sparrow with NO rapping version out there?
I can overlook the gheyness for the sake of a good tune.
Jimmy, Dohtimes:
The cat I used is from the free iPad app “Talking Tom Cat.” There is, as you read, an iPhone/iPod version. The iPad app will record up to 45 second clips; you speak to it and it records then repeats it. They have other characters, too, some free, some paid.
Had to record one sentence or paragraph at a time, since it takes any pause as “done!” and starts playback. There are 16 different clips of the cat edited together, partly because I did it as I was getting ready for work this morning and was a little rushed.
Since I’m using a Mac, I put the clips together with iMovie, although there are plenty of Windows programs that can do the same thing. Decided to zoom in to get it full landscape mode, since it records in portrait mode (full body of the cat shows). The hardest part is lining up the zooms so it doesn’t jump around; a straightforward zoom cuts off the top of the cat’s head, so I had to zoom, then scroll up — that’s the part that’s hard to line up.
4of7:
There is a dog: “Talking Ben the Dog.”
Wow! Sounds like a lot of work.
Double Bravo!
4of7:
Yeah, it was a little bit of work. But what else am I going to do? Something that actually contributes to society? Hardly!
Thanks Basil. I loved that cat’s monologue, specially with the accent. 🙂
Jimmy:
I don’t know where that cat gets the accent.
I do!
Thanks for the link to Harvey’s Blog and nice job as always
