I really like Best of the Web and read it every week day, but I’ve noticed how they’ve tended to ignore the whole immigration issue. Now that Bush gave a primetime speech making the topic impossible to avoid, they’re pretty dismissive and glib about the critics.
How many other supporters of the President on immigration are left?
according to the polls, a majority of people support hat the president said in his speech, give or take 80 percent…. but you know how hard it is to get an accurate number from polls these days. so probobly none.
How many people agree with everything the Pres has proposed on the issue? Probably none. The question is how many people agree on any solution to this issue. Any solution would be a huge and complicated project, and unfortunately any plan has to go through the senate. And now people are thinking of not voting republican to send some kinda Ross-Perot-gives-us-Bill-Clinton message. I would posit to anybody of this mindset that the problems which would come from not voting republican because they are angry would be worse than the problems we see in immigration or government spending now. Case in point people are angry about Bush 1 raising taxes so we get Bill Clinton who raises taxes and gives us 9/11. People need to calm down.
I support the President on this one.

I can’t help but feel like I’m caught in the last few pages of Animal Farm. It appears that some really are more equal than others. I also find myself looking back and forth between the pigs and people (you pick which one matches which party), but I can’t tell which is which.
Watching my son play little league last night, I was reminded of the axiom “you have to put the ball in play to give the other side a chance to make an error.” I’m not wild about President Bush’s plan. The penalties for illegal immigrants need to be tougher (I want deportation but I don’t see that happening with this congress) and I hate the guest worker program.
Big picture-wise, it’s a start. We have to keep the pressure on our elected officials to do more. The other side isn’t going to give up and we can’t afford to either or we will fade in to obscurity.
I think Bush’s “No Juan left Behind” program is brilliant! So they got that going for them… which is nice.
Well, I’m conservative and I support the prez on this issue.
Probably because I do know of a person who entered the country legally and is now “illegal” due to a paperwork snafu at the immigration office. I could doubt her story, sure, but being a legal immigrant myself, I can symathize with how screwed up the whole naturalization process is.
I too sympathize with people who wish to come here. That said. I have a real problem believing that someone who was willing to break the law to come here, continued to break the law to live here, will become a law abiding citizen because the Pres. granted them amnesty.
I believe they will obey only those laws that they agree with.
In the end we will have a group of people who are only here for the money and benefits instead of people who believe in and support the founding beliefs expressed in the Constitution and Declaration of Independence.
I have NOTHING against immigrants, my fore fathers and mothers were all immigrants. I do have something against criminals though, and if you came across the border illegally- you’re a criminal. Sorry. Fact. Nothing personal.
