Hatless in Hattiesburg “shamelessly copied from IMAO”
Why aren’t the rest of you spreading joy to the joyless like that?
Come on, fess up. I can’t wait to hear your feeble excuses.
And don’t tell me your dog ate your “CTRL” and “C” keys.

I “Like” posts to my Facebook page a lot.
Does that count?
I always feel guilty when I poach someone’s carefully crafted blog post, even though I link to the original every time.
I do it anyway, but I feel guilty.
No blue-highlighted name means no blog to spread joy to the joyless, Harvey.
We’re just wandering, homeless souls spreading no joy to the other wandering, homeless, joyless souls with no blogs that spread no joy… around.
I often plagergerize (which is a fancy way of saying…copy) stuff from IMAO. I put it on my Facebook page or send it in e-mails to my friends…but I always do it shamefully.
Oh. And no Tweeties… and total Facebooklessness… which many claim is a modern form of total, social fecklessness.
“plagiarism in the defense of liberty is no vice.” 🙂 thanks for the imaolanch!
True story: back in 2003, Frank discovered me after checking his referer logs and noticing I’d mentioned IMAO in a post…
I haven’t forgotten where I came from, Hatless.
And as far as I’m concerned, as long as you link the source, I couldn’t give less of a damn how much of the original article you post.
Ditto for Frank.
I just steal the occasional single Random Thought, and pretend it was my random thought
Cause we’re not the New York Times?
“…shamelessly
copiedstolen from IMAO”Copyright is copyright. Theft is theft. Alles klar, kommissar?
Since it has a credit link, I prefer to think of it as “free publicity” rather than “theft”, and I encourage it.
IMAO is not the RIAA.
Professor Ward Churchill could not be reached for comment.
True, Harvey, but Mr./Ms./Miss/Mrs./Mme. Hatless should have quoted a selection and linked to the rest. I’m picky about copyright. I respect the work of others and expect the same from them; however, reasonable protection of copyright does not make someone the RIAA. The RIAA is correct to protect copyright. It is absolutely wrong to do it in an overzealous and quasi-legal manner.
I’ve found that a simple email works to give someone a heads up.
If content use doesn’t matter very much, you might remove the copyright notice, or better still, license the site via a Creative Commons license. A “use with attribution” license would allow folks to use as much content as desired provided it’s attributed.
Burmashave – To the letter of the law, Hatless violated IMAO’s copyright.
In the process, Hatless praised IMAO and gave the site a link.
To me, the latter far outweighs the former, which is why I chose praise as Hatless’s punishment.
Now, strictly as a matter of netiquette, you’re right, the preferred method is to link, excerpt, and finish by saying “go read the whole thing.”
But, big picture, as long as the link is there, I consider the faux pas minor and forgivable, and I’ll take it as the compliment it was intended to be.
Even if Daily Kos took an entire IMAO post and fisked the crap out of it, my reaction would still be “cool, we got a link”.
I understand you’re more sensitive about the issue, and that’s fine. I just really like getting linked.
K.O., Harvey, you may have guessed that I am not a loose, free and relaxed kind of guy.
