Thursday Night Open Thread

Remember Thomas Dolby?

He’s actually still around, but he never really caught on in the U.S. like he did in his native U.K. And not that he was a monster artist over there, but he had much more chart success on his home turf. He only had one big hit in the U.S.

This is not that hit.

  1. Karaoke Assault: Daddy, I want a squirrel. Get me one of those squirrels. I want one!

Media Assault: Karaoke, dear, you have many marvelous pets.

Karaoke Assault: All I see on TV are one phony and two dogs and four cats and six bunny rabbits and two parakeets and three canaries and a green parrot and a turtle, and a silly old hamster! I WANT a SQUIRREL!

Media Assault: All right, pet. Daddy will get you a squirrel just as soon as he possibly can.

Karaoke Assault: But I don’t want any old squirrel! I want a trained squirrel!!

Media Assault: [wearily] Very well. Mr. Worker; how much will you give for one of those squirrels? Name your price.

    [Karaoke smiles]

Wily Worker: Oh they’re not for sale. She can’t have one.

Karaoke Assault: [her smile drops to an angry expression] Daddy!

Wily Worker: [imitating Media Assault] “I’m sorry, darling. Mr. Worker’s being unreasonable.”

Karaoke Assault: If you won’t get me a squirrel, I’ll get one myself!

  2. A kind of obscure Beatles song, off of Beatles VI:

    ♩♫♪

If you let me take your part
    I will prove to you
    We will make another start
    If I’m part of you
    Oprah. Up your sights, now
    Tell me what you see:
It is no surprise now —
    MSNBC!

Big and black those clowns may be
    Time will pass that by;
If you put your trust in media
    We’ll make bright your day!
    Look into these lies, now
    Tell me what you see
    Don’t you realize now
    You can be P.C.
    Tell me what, Jussie

    [Chicago P.D.:]

Listen to me one more time, how can I get truth?
Can’t you try to see that crime’s
    Tracing back to you?
    Open up your eyes, now
    Tell me, NBC:
    It is no surprise now
    What you see is weak
    Tell me what, Jussie

    [Feds:]

Listen to me one more time, how can I get truth?
Can’t you try to see that crime
    Tracing back to you?
    Open up your eyes, now
    Tell me, NBC
    It is no surprise now
    What you see is meek
    Tell me:
    “What Jussie?”

    ♩♫♪

  3. Comedy, at least to me:

JUSSIE SMOLLETT- ‘I SWEAR TO GOD, I DID NOT DO THIS’
    Pleads to ‘Empire’ Cast

    TMZ | 1-21-2019

Jussie Smollett is begging his “Empire” family to believe he’s innocent and continue supporting him — even as the drama of his arrest postponed a scene Thursday in Chicago.

Sources on the “Empire” set tell us the cast and crew were waiting at least 30 minutes for Jussie to begin the scheduled scene.

When he eventually showed his face he was very emotional, and surrounded by his family.

We’re told he addressed everyone on set, saying …”I’m sorry I’ve put you all through this and not answered any calls. I wanted to say I’m sorry and, you know me, I would never do this to any of you, you are my family. I swear to God, I did not do this.”

After that, he left the set.

We’re told it was obvious Jussie had been crying a lot, so producers said he would have to come back later.

He did, and we’re told he is currently shooting the scene.
