Wednesday Night Open Thread

I first heard of Halley’s Comet on September 23, 1966. That was night the TV show The Time Tunnel first aired the episode about Halley’s Comet pass by Earth in 1910. I’d never heard of Halley’s Comet before then, but it fascinated me.

That’s why I was paying attention when a space probe first visited Halley’s Comet in 1986.

    • This is clearly a general-theater-audience-friendly version… I wonder how Bill Haley performed it in nightclubs?

When Lennon did a cover, the lyrics change from “at the ball tonight” to “and ball tonight,” a noticeable change of meaning. And “shack on down to the social hall” becomes “shack on down to the union hall,” which rings more true-to-life.

It’s possible Lennon was performing it as he heard it, and was not changing it.

  1. In 1986 I was in scout troop 280 and in the spring we went to the “Haley’s Comet Camporee” with about 50 other scout troops. The goal was to spend some time Saturday night looking at the comet through one of the multitude of telescopes brought for that purpose.

It clouded up at about 8pm. No one got to see the comet that weekend.

At about 2am it started to rain. Apparently we didn’t set up our tent in an optimal place because a river was running through it by about 4am.

I don’t remember anything of the camporee after that.
