Wednesday Night Open Thread

Several days back, there was a discussion about the song “Singin’ in the Rain” and some were surprised to see just how old it really was. Most people know it from the 1952 movie, and while some knew it wasn’t written for that film, few know it was actually from the 1920s.

The song’s earliest film appearance was from 1929’s “The Hollywood Revue.

Of course, it does beg the question – are the drugs making the crazy people crazier so they’re going out and killing people, or are crazy people simply more inclined to both take drugs AND kill people?

AOC (What a Beautiful World) (to the tune of “I.G.Y. (What a Beautiful World)” by Donald Fagen)

Sandy’s tough on the Stars and Stripes
She can tell
This dream’s in sight
You’ve got to admit it
At this point in time it’s unclear
If the future looks bright
High-speed trains, all gaslight and glitter
Under a sea of red
Ninety minutes from New York to Paris
Well, by private jet, if you’re A.O.C.

What a beautiful world this should be
What a laborious time to be free

Get your ticket to free meals and safe space
Like last time
The fix is in
You’ll be a witness to that same old dance in disguise
You know we’ve got to win
Here at home we’ll pay for a city
Powered by the sun
Perfect weather, and a dreamlike world
There’ll be expanded taxes, one for everyone

What a beautiful world this should be
What a laborious time to be free

High-speed trains, all gaslight and glitter
Under a sea of red
Ninety minutes from New York to Paris
(More leisure time for artists everywhere)
A just machine to make big decisions
Programmed by fellows with compassion and vision
We’ll be clean when their work is done
We’ll be eternally free yes and eternally young

What a beautiful world this should be
What a laborious time to be free

New Report Disproves Man-Made Climate Change – Democrats Apologize, Advocate For Lower Taxes And Smaller Government

“Taxes and regulations bad! Nancy smash!”

WASHINGTON (AP) – In light of a new report showing that human activity is not the determining factor driving average global temperatures, congressional Democrats said they will advocate for the repeal of the higher taxes and more stringent regulations that had been at the heart of their environmental policies for decades.

“This is a little embarrassing,” said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. “For years, the Democrat party has advocated punitive taxation on everything from air conditioners to plastic grocery bags in an effort to cool off the earth. You know, blah, blah, blah, save the planet, gotta break a few eggs if you want that lower-sea-level omelet, all that jazz. We got sucker-punched by bad science, but it’s not too late to turn this around.”

“Frankly, it’s quite a relief to let it all go and embrace the roots of classical liberalism again: less taxes, more liberty,” Pelosi said. “Now we just need to get the press to make the phrase ‘tax and spend Republicans’ catch on.”

Freshman Democrat Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was spotted near a trash barrel outside the Capitol building, burning copies of the Green New Deal initiative.

“Turns out it was the dumbest idea I ever had, and I’ve videoed myself talking to a garbage disposal. Heck, I even made an entire video about how climate change would destroy the earth in twelve years,” said Ocasio-Cortez, making air quotes and rolling her eyes. “Like, I feel like such a rube, ya know? People should just forget about all that stuff I said. I know I’m going to act like it never happened. In fact, next week, I’m introducing a bill to kill the entire Department of Energy. Solar! Wind! Pffft! They never even once considered perpetual motion generators. Which have a MUCH smaller carbon footprint, by the way. Not that we need to care about THAT anymore.”

Democrat Senator Ed Markey, who co-sponsored the Green New Deal, seemed eager to embrace a smaller-government lifestyle.

“I’ve been in politics for 40 years,” said Markey. “Did everything I could to make government bigger. Thought it was the only thing that would save us from global cooling, global warming, global temperature stagnation, whatever they’re calling it this year. Turns out temperatures change all the time no matter what people do. I just feel silly. Anyway, I’m gonna go reverse every vote I made since I was first elected. If the world’s not ending, we might as well be free.”

As of this writing, the White House could not be reached for comment, as the White House phone system was overloaded by elected officials suggesting which stupid law to repeal first.

Ask IMAO Anything: Answers #8

Time again for Ask IMAO Anything, where you can, um, Ask IMAO Anything. The concept is in the title, so, you know, you don’t really need me to explain it. But I’ve never let that stop me.

You ask a question, and either one of the other Moon Nukers will provide an answer, or we will in a future post. Or, you can email us at Ask.IMAO.Anything@gmail.com

CayleyGraph2015
cayleygraph2015: Has the stray mouse whose click screwed up the previous “Ask IMAO” posting been disciplined?

Basil
He was a naughty naughty mouse. Good mouse at heart, but he had to learn his lesson. We’re all about some tough love at IMAO.

walruskkkch
walruskkkch: and can you please supply a video of the discipline. Asking for a friend.

Basil
Sure. Here you go.

Christopher
Christopher: There is a monkey on my property in Indiana, is it here to kill me? Will Frank come over to kill it? Or is he too busy playing Mario Bros with his kids?

Basil
We wondered what happened to Scary Evil Monkey. He’s harmless. Irritating, but harmless. Well, mostly harmless. If you want Frank to get rid of him, just send Frank the standard $25,000 Monkey Removal Fee and he’ll be right over.

walruskkkch
walruskkkch: None that she could use as they were imposed upon her by the Patriarchy and exist to promote male dominance of the world.

Basil
I’ll take “Non-sequiturs” for $400, Alex.

c64wood
c64wood: What is the first Rock n Roll record?

Basil
1949’s Saturday Night Fish Fry by Louis Jordan. Chuck Berry said so. So, yeah, your parents listened to Rock N Roll. You know what else they did to Rock N Roll, right? Mmm-hmm. Now aren’t you glad you asked.

walruskkkch
walruskkkch: If you were a Survivalist, what Would Go in your Bugout Bag ?

Basil
Porn.

Francis
Francis: What did they use for the years before year 1AD? For example March 15, 44BC.

Sent from my iPhone

Basil
That was the day Julius Caesar was assassinated. Only, the Snap On Tools calendar on his wall said 710, which was based on the founding of the city of Rome. They called it “ab urbe condita” (AUC). The Hebrew calendar was 24th day of Adar in 3717. And don’t get me started on the Chinese calendar. The year was either 2653 or 2593. That’s a 40-year variance. Stuff like that is why the communists were able to take over.

zzyzx
zzyzx: Why is it that everyone in Hollywood who’s first name is “Seth” is a dipstick?

Basil
Ape Law.

zzyzx
zzyzx: Where did the vandals take the handles?

Basil
Out to a Dylan concert.

CayleyGraph2015
cayleygraph2015: What do you do when you see an ally make a true assertion, but justify it with entirely faulty logic?

Basil
Nothing at the time. If your opponents are convinced by faulty logic — which is likely anyway, otherwise they wouldn’t take the position they have, right? — then your ally may be able to convince them with his faulty logic. Later, after your opponents are crushed, driven before you, and you hear the lamenations of their women, then — and only then — you can slap him upside the head and call him a dumbass and set him straight.

Yes, there were more questions submitted, but stuff happened and I didn’t get to them. I’ll make it up to you. Somehow.

Ask IMAO Anything. Because we know everything. And are humble to boot. Gosh, it’s great being so awesome!

Random Thought: Batman and Age of Adult

Can we at least all agree that humans deciding they want to engage in the reproductive act without reproducing and the solution to that being tiny killing will not make the top ten list of “Most Civilized Things Humanity Has Ever Done”?

Seems like the good economy would help Trump against people with radical plans like Bernie Sanders (don’t rock the boat!), but I don’t know if it would help him much against someone boring like Biden.

It would be kind of funny if there’s like 50 Democratic candidates for president and then Biden just runs away with it.

Yay! My brother is moving to Texas! It’s Frasier and Niles back together!

I hate when a programming language makes me but a break in the default for a switch statement. There’s nothing to break!

I didn’t think anyone thought Gen X was particularly special; they just stand out versus the two generations they’re sandwiched between by not being terrible.

It doesn’t convince me you’re very secure in your position when you spend most of your time arguing why other opinions aren’t allowed.

They’re “feminist.” That’s why they focus on the men who are pro-life and completely ignore the women.

It seems like a lot Democrats have to be running just to get their consolation copy of Democratic Presidential Primary the Home Game.

Has either side in the abortion debate tried yelling more? Maybe if one side were louder and angrier, that would solve things.

“If you will kill a convicted murderer, then why won’t you kill a baby?”
*mic drop*

When is Hillary going to enter the presidential race?

My 6yo said “I’m going to do it myself so I don’t have to say please or thank you.”
I’m not sure whether to encourage or discourage that attitude.
Sounds like he’s a budding libertarian.

Every generation gets the Batman it deserves.

I can’t believe my wife is always finding out what the kids like and making a cake of it for their birthdays. If it was up to me, I’d be like “You kids like circles? Here’s a circle cake.”

This is weird. I’m finding myself avoiding spoilers to a show I don’t plan to watch because I don’t to be spoiled to how people will react on Twitter.

My biggest hope is that as the final episode comes to a close, GRRM tweets out “That’s not how it’s supposed to end!”

I finished reading The Silmarillion. I think I’ll later need to do a lengthy rant about it as that thing was ridiculous on a number of different levels.

I hope if you solve all the puzzles in Baba Is You you get to a screen that says “A Winner Is You”
My wife who never plays video games has been a big help. I just can’t get my thinking outside the box enough to solve the later puzzles.

My guess is at the end Jon Snow finally embraces his destiny, lifts his sword, and shouts, “By the power of Grayskull…” and then we find this is all leading into a He-Man reboot with Dany as Evil-Lyn.

I don’t think there’s anything left to say that wasn’t said in the theme song.
“You take the good,
You take the bad,
You take them both and there you have
The Game of Thrones,
The Game of Thrones.“

“When the world never seems
To be livin up to your dreams
And suddenly you’re finding out
The Game of Thrones are all about you.”
It was always about you, the fans.

I don’t like going downtown because I don’t like have to put mental effort into parking. You go someplace, there’s a parking lot right there and you park. That’s how I do things.

I wonder if a CEO could use the Buttigieg dodge if questioned about his pay.
“Why are we talking about that? It’s less than 1% of our company’s revenue.”

I don’t like these variable adult ages. Voting, guns, alcohol, tobacco, being tried as an adult, getting kicked of your parents insurance should all be the same age.

I kinda of seems like the left now spend half their time arguing how throwing things at people is proper political discourse and the other half being completely incoherent.

Remember: The goal is to be less terrible than Trump. I don’t know how everyone keeps limboing under that low of a hurdle.

Why do we let people drive a car at an earlier age than own a handgun? Cars kill more people than guns—probably partly because of letting young people drive.

I have strong opinions on how I don’t care about what you’re talking about.

“That man is quite tough.”
“Yes. We call him a ‘badass.’ That may seem like a non sequitur, but it is his low-quality buttocks that has made him indomitable.”
