Saturday Night Hootenanny

Well I wasn’t really providing a question last week, given I laid it out for the most part but, fair is fair and we anoint Bob in Feenicks with an OGE. Congratulations.

No contest this week even though there is a connection for all the songs. I’ll make it super easy for you, barely an inconvenience.

It’s my Birthday. They are all birthday related songs. Nothing else. Seriously. Nothing. Else.

I will although give an award if you can say which anniversary of my natal day it is. Don’t get cheeky.

To the music.

How To De-Stress Yourself When Reading News

There’s a lot of words coming at us these days, because everybody has a platform. One can get whiplash from all the charges and counter-charges. Here is a way to keep one’s sanity.

From any story, simply mentally edit attempts (yours or anyone else’s) to presume to have knowledge of what is going on in someone else’s mind. It’s hard, because it’s human nature to guess at — and then feel sure of — and then be certain of — the motives of people and groups.

The first two of those are what are difficult to resist, but will make your reading much more palatable, while you gather the facts that make the third possible.

Being human nature, it’s almost irresistible to guess at and assume the motives behind others’ actions, but that way lies madness.

Once you mentally delete attempts at clairvoyance, stories are stripped down to essential facts and actions, the things worth retaining and debating. Stories that don’t consist of anything except opinions presented as facts and actions will evaporate altogether, saving you from wasting time and effort on them.

“This politician did this…” — read this — “…because of an attitude…” (ignore).

“This group did this…” — read this — “…because of their plan to…” (ignore).

With the mental edit in place, you will read articles much more quickly and get value out of them. Added bonuses: accusations of racism dissolve. Conspiracy theories are boiled down to facts, not assumptions. Grandstanding and pulpit-pounding again appear as idiotic as they are, and can be completely ignored. It will be glaringly obvious that certain people routinely have nothing to offer other than assumptions about what is going on in others’ minds, and can be ignored as well — freeing up even more time. And you will never be embarrassed to find that what you once assumed to be someone’s motivation turns out to be mistaken in the end.

I notice that the AP Stylebook went right out the window:

AP Stylebook Discourages Use of ‘Riot,’ Expands Definition of ‘Protest’ to Include ‘Violence’
National Review | October 1, 2020 | Brittany Bernstein

The Associated Press Stylebook was amended this week to discourage the use of the word “riot” to describe violent protests, instead expanding the definition of “protest” to include violent demonstrations.

“Use care in deciding which term best applies: A riot is a wild or violent disturbance of the peace involving a group of people. The term riot suggests uncontrolled chaos and pandemonium,” said the AP Stylebook, which sets style guidelines followed by many mainstream media publications.

“Focusing on rioting and property destruction rather than underlying grievance has been used in the past to stigmatize broad swaths of people protesting against lynching, police brutality or for racial justice, going back to the urban uprisings of the 1960s,” it added.

The recommendation comes after months of rioting and looting in cities nationwide sparked by the death of George Floyd in May.

Riots in the immediate aftermath of the police shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wis. in August led to the fatal shooting of two people and caused an estimated $2 million in damage to city-owned property alone. Violent demonstrations across the country have also injured a number of law enforcement officers, including in Portland, Ore. where riots have raged for more than 125 days straight.

Merriam-Webster defines a riot as “violent public disorder, specifically a tumultuous disturbance of the public peace by three of more persons assembled together and acting with a common intent.”

The Associated Press called for the use of “unrest” in place of “riot” when referring to property destruction caused by rioting.

“Unrest is a vaguer, milder and less emotional term for a condition of angry discontent and protest verging on revolt,” the AP continued.

“Protest and demonstration refer to specific actions such as marches, sit-ins, rallies or other actions meant to register dissent. They can be legal or illegal, organized or spontaneous, peaceful or violent, and involve any number of people,” the AP said. “Revolt and uprising both suggest a broader political dimension or civil upheavals, a sustained period of protests or unrest against powerful groups or governing systems.”

Quote of the Day: David Blackmon on Joe & Kamala

Crystal clarity:

America is back to the horror of 2009 all over again, only worse. This time our incoming President is an elderly, life-long circus clown buffoon of a human being who doesn’t know where he is much of the time. Where Barack Obama was a scheming, anti-American Machiavellian monster, Biden is merely a sock puppet for a vast array of such monsters who will write his every spoken word and control his every action, while feeding him his tapioca pudding in the morning.

Worse than that, Biden’s designated successor, who will take over for him when he resigns in a few months, is a combination of a scheming, anti-American Machiavellian monster and a sock puppet for the same vast array who will control Biden. That’s quite the combination of skillsets for someone who will soon hold the most powerful job on earth.

Researchers Achieve Sustained, High-Fidelity Quantum Teleportation
University of Chicago via Phys.org | 12/29/20

Quantum teleportation is a “disembodied” transfer of quantum states from one location to another. The quantum teleportation of a qubit is achieved using quantum entanglement, in which two or more particles are inextricably linked to each other. If an entangled pair of particles is shared between two separate locations, no matter the distance between them, the encoded information is teleported.

.

In a paper published in PRX Quantum, the team presents for the first time a demonstration of a sustained, long-distance teleportation of qubits made of photons (particles of light) with fidelity greater than 90%.

The Stupid, it burns!

Welcome to a new feature we will, unfortunately, probably adding to quite frequently.

Our first installment comes from Congress. (I know, I know, easing pickings but this really fits the definition of “The Stupid, it Burns!)

Dem. Congressman Concludes Congress’ Opening Prayer With ‘Amen…and A Woman’

The Democrat congressmen invited to give the invocation for the opening of the 117th U.S. Congress is making the rounds on social media for concluding his prayer in…well, a highly unusual way.

And by “unusual,” I mean “unusually stupid.”

Democrat Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, a United Methodist pastor and  the representative for Missouri’s 5th District, concluded his prayer by dedicating it “in the name of the monotheistic God, Brahama, and god known by many names by many different things,” with “Brahama” referring to the primary creator god in Hinduism.

He then bizarrely finished his prayer with “Amen…and a woman.”
