I don’t know if Herman Cain actually has a chance in the Republican primary, but I want to believe.
I’m a rogue programmer who doesn’t play by the rules. That’s why most of my code doesn’t compile.
Jesus said the Lord will come like a “thief in the night”, so the end of the world is probably the day after everyone is expecting.
So can the Objectivist principle be restated as “A is 10” or is not convertible from hex?
On American Idol, I didn’t quite get Stephen Tyler’s comment to Scotty, “I can fit a baby’s head in my mouth!” but it does have an element of truth to it.
In an appearance today, Gingrich nearly strangled himself with his own tie, so not as big a disaster as usual.

I’m concerned this will end like 2008, with “conservative” people on certain conservative blogs complaining that there’s no point in voting for him because he doesn’t have a chance and because he lacks “fire in the belly”. If it happens again, I’m going to become the Cagney Strangler! As the name implies, I will run around in a James Cagney mask and strangle people.
The way things are going, the end of the world will be the day after Obama’s 2nd inaguration. The phrase “thief in the night” does not apply there, of course. An accurate phrase for Obama would be “thief running around strangling people in broad daylight”
Nearly? Dang it!
A thief in the night would come the day before everyone is expecting it.
Herman Cain is my standard for a Pres candidate now. But since I live in NC, my primary vote will be worthless.
Well, now you guys have ruined it — by expecting Jesus a day before or after everyone else is expecting Him, you’ve thrown off His timetable. No one is supposed to know!
I think Lileks pointed out that “No Rules, Just Right” is a lousy slogan for a restaurant. I don’t want Outback to be a rogue chain that doesn’t play by the rules. I want my Outback to observe laws regarding cleanliness. I want the fire exits to not be nailed shut. I don’t want the steak that costs $18.99 on the menu to show up on the check as $23,347.78. “Hey, we told you! No rules!”
So why are you even trying to get your code to compile. Just slam it into Production and when the whole system blows chunks, blame it all on the idiot Project Manager (guys like me). That’s what I deal with every day. Did you test? Blank stare… Did you have a back out plan? Blank stare… Did you make a copy of the Production environment before you put your code into Prod? Blank stare… I thought we talked about all this and had it all planned out? Blank stare along with slight drool onto pocket protector… Meeting adjourned… Then I go check into the Ned Beatty Suite with my boss!!! I love Programmers!!!
“I’m a rogue programmer who doesn’t play by the rules. That’s why most of my code doesn’t compile”.
I thought bad code was the rule.
Random thought: I sure hope our next president likes bacon, and isn’t a marxist.
“In an appearance today, Gingrich nearly strangled himself with his own tie, so not as big a disaster as usual”.
Newt pulls his foot out of his mouth long enough to choke on his tie! Film at 11.
Random thought: What is this American idol I keep hearing of, and isn’t that one of the first 10 commandments?
Having Herman Cain for president would be fun. He would say “I am eliminating food stamps” and the liberals would scream in protest and we would all be like “Opposing our black preisent ??!!?? RACIST LIBERALS !!!” It would be so much fun.
In 2012 we must vote NO… No Obama.
Gingrich is the Kucenich of the republican party. But he is still better than Obama.
OT, but I have to say I am creeped out by this site’s ability to pick a random avatar for me that’s a dead ringer. I am purple with squiggly ilmbs, a mop for hair, and I always stick my tongue out when making pithy observations. Freaky!
Who doesn’t?
I don’t like my Avtar because his weener was lopped off!
Oh wait a minute, that’s that giant thing wrapped around his body…excellent portrayal! Did you get my picture somewhere?
Personally, I feel like A is 1010b.
One of the reasons I like using Eclipse for my IDE is that it compiles on the fly. So it let’s me know as I’m typing that what I’m doing doesn’t make any sense, as opposed to waiting til I finish coding and giving me 60 bazillion errors at compile time. (I’m looking at you, EMACS and gcc!)
Compiling errors are exactly why I write everything in ksh. No muss, no fuss, no functionality, no pesky user interaction…
@USSJC: I thought compiling was testing. And having been tested, it is prolly ready for production.
@Plenty-Oh: I dunno why, but until this moment, I didn’t know anyone who uses ksh. Mebbe it’s a geographical thing.
He’ll likely apologize to the tie tomorrow.
“On American Idol, I didn’t quite get Stephen Tyler’s comment to Scotty, “I can fit a baby’s head in my mouth!” but it does have an element of truth to it.”
The really disturbing part is the absence of a word like “think” or believe.” “I think I can fit a baby’s head in my mouth,” would just be odd, but not disturbing. To definitively say he can do so leads one to believe that this has been proven…and given his drug history, one can actually picture the entire scenario playing out. I wonder if somewhere right now there’s a troubled kid in therapy recounting this weird recurring nightmare he’s had as far back as he can remember.
Basic Bible illiteracy gives me fits:
Matthew 24:36 “But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone.
So some smuck knows stuff JC doesn’t know. Real dangerous types. Drink the Kool-aid, put on the tin foil hats, give me all you money, lookie here another testiment of JC it written on golden plates in reformed Egyptian Hieroglyphs that you need special peeper glasses to read…oops may have gone a bridge too far.
why doesn’t my avatar work?
@EdthePastor: Because it’s a Democrat?
@EdthePastor: Working is so pre-Obama.
“So can the Objectivist principle be restated as “A is 10″ or is not convertible from hex?”
No. A = 1010
Weird thread. I understand the Bible stuff, but the American Idol and Leet compiler speak is lost on me.
I wonder if that ‘quote’ worked.
Anyway. I thought the reason most of my code doesn’t compile was the little gnomes in the computer trying to sabotage everything I did… Or maybe it’s just that Java is way too picky. Hmm…
Wow. It totally didn’t work. Oh, lookit that. There’s a preview button? I could have used that… I’m gonna try again… you can delete my last post. Haha.

Sometimes my code is on the constipated side when it compiles.

Explanation for Non-technical Folks
To explain for any non-software industry folks, software developers write computer code in files using standard keyboard characters and using English words for many commands. Once a module (usually part of a program and consisting of one or more files) is done, the developer runs a “compiler,” which is a program that converts the file(s) into binary form (ones and zeroes) because this is how it is run by the computer. The compiler program does basic checks, so if it fails there, the module has completely failed. In other words, the program does not work at all. It’s kinda like working on your car and trying to start it after you’ve put everything back together.
If it does compile properly, then the module should undergo much more testing and tweaking before it is installed in a place where it is used by actual users. Essentially, you don’t want your users to be the ones beating their heads against the wall as they test your code for the first time (see USSJC’s comment #4 above). Note that Microsoft gets away with shoddy testing by convincing its users that they are somehow incompetent. Apple uses a different approach in that if the software doesn’t work, you should overlook it because Apple is so cool
As to the other developers here, I know that I have oversimplified to a great degree.
My Niece had a 3 lb 12oz baby last week. Healthy, she’s just tiny.
Let me know if anyone sees Stephen Tyler anywhere in flyover country
so her Husband can load a shotgun.
Still, all you folks make way more sense than Obama…
Compiler? Real programmers use “copy con program.exe”.
Yes, I know it’s old. So am I. 🙂
(If your first computer ran Windows, never mind. You woulnd’t believe it if I explained it.)
DavidD:
I mentioned DOS command line to some kid (about 30) the other day. Looked at me like I was speaking Greek.
10 reasons the world won’t end Saturday:
1. Rosie O Donnell still hasn’t lost those stubborn 100 pounds.
2. Hugo Chavez still doesn’t have a USS Cargo ship named after him.
3. Labron James still doesn’t have a championship.
4. The Cubs haven’t won the world series.
5. Michael Moore hasn’t lost his virginity, to a girl.
6. Paul Krugman hasn’t been right once.
7. Michelle Obama isn’t down to her “Bikini” weight.
8. Charlie Sheen still isn’t “Winning”
9. Pelosi hasn’t melted yet.
10. Obama still hasn’t figured out what that big red button on his desk does.
Thanks Pastor, you’re a laugh riot. I come here now everyday to get picked on. Really, I haven’t had to deal with bulling for 30+ years but thanks to you it’s all come back and in spades. I would say that evangelicals are the Rights Code Pink but that would be offensive and I try always to be unoffensive. Luckily, I have you to do it for me.
Let’s pick on the Catholics for a while.
You know, if that Rick Santorum guy gets elected, he’ll take his marching orders directly from the Pope!
Then abortion will not only be illegal, but punishable by stoning!
And everyone will have to eat fish on Friday!
And all your kids will be educated by nuns armed with metal rulers!
The horror…. the horror…
