The New York City Health Department will be conducting a massive, 50-question telephone survey of New Yorkers to get a better handle on the level of alcohol abuse in the city.
The smart money is betting that afterward, you’ll only be able to buy beer in shot glasses.
I have a crusade for Mikey. How about he tries to find a cure for terminal “foot in mouth” disease or the dreaded “progressive influenza”, or “OWS dementia”. That would at least be helpful instead of destructive.
You’d think the people of NYC would rather have him focusing on real problems like gangs, drugs, prostitution, violence, crime, and the like before these stupid crusades.

New Yorkers elected Bloomberg to a third term in 2009. New Yorkers know what a real mayor looks like. New York isn’t San Francisco, which hasn’t had a sane mayor since 1962 or so. Rudy Giuliani was they mayor in 2001. Could Bloomberg’s opponent, a fellow named Bill Thompson, actually have been worse than Bloomberg? It’s possible, of course (think of San Francisco again, or, for that matter, the current mayors of Los Angeles, Boston, and Chicago), but it’s looking less likely every day.
Make that “their mayor” or perhaps “the mayor”, not “they mayor”. I have no idea what I was thinking when I typed that.

My pithy response:
I guess you’d have to get a government grant to calculate when the mothers milk is affected by what she eats. I have had and have seen breastfed babies and they are often off the carts in development and weight/height. Will this begin a new round of “your babies too fat” “crisis obese babies” and “we (the government) can take care of your babies better than you. Another thought some women can’t nurse are we now going to pay women to provide milk for mothers who can’t. Dairies full of lactating women, a new source of employment? I guess maybe that’s sexist as I hear men have the ability to lactate as well. I’m telling you a progressive idea has more legs than a centipede.
I must say that this whole story just makes me somewhat cranky, after choosing to nurse all 6 of my children the idea that someone is forced to do so make me want to plug Nanny Bloomberg up to a breast pump for a couple of hours to see how he’d like to be turned into Milky the Marvelous Milking cow.
this formula ban in hospitals in NY is VERY scary. My daughter had a low suck reflex and would have DIED without formula. but i totally see your image of lactating mummies in hospital dairy rooms – cant breastfeed your kid? okay, we’ll just give the kid to a woman who can. scary scary stuff!
We read your blog with interest and want to address some inaccuracies. The initiative does not require hospitals to “hide” or “lock up” formula, nor does it restrict access to it for those who want it. Parents who want formula will not have to convince a nurse to sign it out by giving a medical reason. Parents can and always will be able to simply ask for formula and receive it – no medical necessity required, no written consent. For 3 years, New York State Law has required that mothers be provided accurate information on the benefits of breastfeeding. The City initiative does not require that mothers asking for formula receive a lecture.
The piece erroneously dismisses the positive health impacts of breast feeding for which there is there is overwhelming evidence — supported by national and international health organizations. For mothers, breastfeeding reduces the risk of breast and ovarian cancers. For babies, breastfeeding reduces the risk of ear, respiratory and gastrointestinal infections, as well as asthma.

Ultimately, our goal is to support a mother in whatever decision she makes when it comes to nursing her baby and this initiative specifically is designed to support a mother who decides that she wants to breast-feed by asking participating hospital staff to respect her and refrain from automatically supplementing her baby with formula (unless it becomes medically necessary or the mother changes her mind).
Bottom line: It does not restrict the mother’s nursing options in any way – nor does it restrict access to formula for those who want it.
