A Simple Act of Bravery

We have here our idiotic “Rock the Vote” and “Vote or Die,” but the Iraqis faced the prospect of “Vote and Die” and turned out anyway. Most of us never has to face such danger for something we consider so simple (or even an inconvenience). God bless them and guide them. It’s only a start, but hopefully it will lead to what the region needs and the what the good people there deserve.

  1. And we can’t get half the people in our own country to vote – and a poll I saw earlier this week showed that 50% of the people taked to wouldn’t risk their life for that freedom. The Iraqi people are an example that some of those in the US need to follow.

  2. When you think about it, it’s amazing that we can vote. It’s a truly revolutionary idea that we can pick the people who govern us. My grandparents, who came here from Galicia (the one in Poland, just north of Slovakia, not the one in Spain), couldn’t do that . . . until they came here. I remind myself of that every time that I’m tempted not to vote.

  3. The Iraqis truly are brave. It’s a reminder of how lucky we are to live in a country where we can vote without being in danger of losing our lives.
The elections were a great success, yet we already have Teddy Kennedy and John Kerry carping about them. “Bush needs to get past the elections” (Kennedy)
“I don’t know how you could say it was a legitimate election when some parts of the country did not vote or couldn’t vote” (Kerry)
Hmm, John, well, their LAST election was “Do you want to re-elect Saddam Hussein” (check yes or no)
Let’s just say, the people who checked ‘no’ weren’t around to see this election. But heck, at least Saddam ran a LEGITIMATE election, right?
I mean, the Sunnis got to decide whether they wanted to re-elect him or die.
God bless our troops, and the the brave Iraqi national guardsmen, and the entire country of Iraq. I hope they’re able to establish a functioning democracy.

  4. Amen to that. I’ve been on a cloud all day, and I realized a few minutes ago that it’s because of the historic events occuring today. These people are standing up for their own right to freedom in a way that is every bit as brave as the Boston Tea Party or any other act of protest in the American Revolution.
Makes me feel good that our country is to thank for these people’s chance at liberty.

  5. Y’all should check out this link to Free Republic. It’s a pictorial representation of Iraqi elation at the idea of voting. Very impressive to be a “part” of it. On that link someone wrote, which I would like to see dedicated to our servicemen & women:
“We have just given the greatest gift one man can give to another. There is no selfless act more divine than giving ones life for another mans freedom. God is smiling, and proud of us today. The fallen soldiers that have given everything so that this gift is possible are being greeted with open arms as they pass through heavens gate for there is a special place reserved for their arrival”.
    God Bless then all.
