BTW, any of you out there in IMAO land feel strongly about the Martha Stewart conviction? I never really cared, but I guess I leaned towards why in the world was so much effort put on getting her in jail for… whatever it is she did? Shoulda spent that extra cash on putting away Michael Jackson.
No, I was never really that concerned. It sounded like she didn’t even know she did anything wrong, if she did anything wrong.
My guess is that she got convicted because so many people are jealous of her. She is the perfect homemaker after all. 😉
Just to follow up – you know the truth is actually pretty bad. Whether anything illegal or not went on with Martha Stewart didn’t matter. She was the head of a large corporation, which makes her evil. If a company is accused of anything bad – even if nobody understands exactly what – that makes the corporation evil. Everyone must be brought low by the principled, benevolent government!
If Michael Jackson were the head of an entertainment company instead of just a creepy deformed guy who likes 9 year old boys for company, he would have been convicted to. The only REAL crime, after all, is success in business. Everything else is a consequence of our evil commercial (i.e., capitalist) society.
As far as I can tell, she was convicted of lying about a crime which no one could prove she committed.
People convict because they hate the person.

She was prosecuted for engaging in the same sort of activity that so many “common folk” decry…the country club elites taking care of each other.
The leftists were calling for the heads of so many CEOs after the Enron exposure…Martha was naturally wrapped into the fold.
The fact that she was a major democrat contributor I’m sure “had nothing to do with it”.
BTW, most real homemakers I know disrespect Martha Stewart. She STEALS other peoples’ ideas and makes millions on them.

I think the government just wanted a high profile head to put on a pike to warn off white collar criminals, and Martha was the unfortunate fall guy. Did she do anything illegal? Maybe (though I have to wonder how a person can be expected to not do something about their stock if they have access to inside information), but it sounds like she was convicted on a different charge than what she was charged with, and any way around it, it sounds like she got unfairly screwed. Now, she’s friends with the Clintons and she blamed Republicans for going after her (even though it seems like it’s the lefties who really hate her), so it’s hard for me to feel sad for her, but I still think she got a crappy deal.
oldmanwinters has it right: Martha was convicted of lying to the feds about a crime which they did not have enough evidence to convict her of. Even worse than an acquittal on the insider-trading charge, the charge had to be dropped before it wsa ever decided.
And Chris D. asks “Did she do anything illegal?” Well, in all candor–she did do something illegal. Something which she should have known was illegal. She began adulthood as a stockbroker, and as a corporate officer surely should have known her insider-trading behavior was suspect. But all that is irrelevant. The real question is: Could the government prove her crime. They could not, but were able to muster up enough evidence to convict her of lying about the “crime”.
Moral of this story: The next time the feds arrest me for insider-trading, I’m not saying one friggin’ word.
Oh–one more thing.

If Martha Stewart got “screwed”, put me down for the same treatment. I’d love to go to a Club Med “jail” for a couple six months, get out and sometimes wear an ankle bracelet, and make a bazillion bucks to boot!
At first I felt mildly sorry for her, then mildly not so sorry after seeing the lying and arrogance up close, then (totally unrelated to her guilt or innocence) I was wildly hopeful that her potential fall as “homemaker extraordinaire” might result in a new revolution of color and individual creativity in homes across America instead of colors and styles that are, IMO, reminiscent of diaper poo pee green and regurgitated clay which is found in the Martha home accessory isle near you. After learning of the “Club Med “jail”” that plea deal alludes to above, it is really difficult to feel very sorry for her but I do hold a begrudging respect for her ability to make a bazillion buck “come back”.
Martha goes to jail for for doing what anyone would do if your broker calls you and says the stock you bought is going to tank tomorrow…..yet the CEO’s of several public companies who robbed their stockholders and employees of billions have yet to see the inside of a cell!!!!
Well, ‘mean old man’ … if “doing what anytone would do” refers only to stockbrokers … maybe. If it refers to the very wealthy, certainly.
Personally, I could care less about Martha and the celeb culture that elected her queen … but would point out that the government didn’t find her guilty … that was a court. Do I feel sorry for her … no … she decided she’d win and worked against the prosecutors rather than with them … and she lost her bet. Too bad we can’t all fall in the crapper and come out selling roses ….
All I know is I would never allow my kids to spend the night at her house no matter how many cool rides are in her ammusement park. And that monkey…my god man they’re disgusting.
I could really care less about Martha. What really ticks me off is the frivolous way we treat sex offenders. Make them all wear ankle bracelets as long as they’re outside a prison wall. (Or give them all a “dirt nap.”
