President Obama’s solution to failing schools: Longer school year. That’s like saying there’s not a lot of nutritional value in a Twinkie, so we have to eat a lot more of them. And just ask Michelle Obama what she thinks about eating more Twinkies: She’ll say it makes you worse than Hitler.
Having the government decide what your kids are supposed to learn in a free country has always been a square peg shoved in a round hole, but the problem is less the indoctrination than the sheer incompetence. Educating your kids is very important, so it’s the exact sort of thing you don’t want bureaucrats anywhere near. But each year education just gets more and more run by the career idiots who make up our government, and the best they’ve done now is make all school more equitable in that they’re all becoming miserable.
The thing is, the big education problem is that we have so many kids without parental support, and a better school breakfast program isn’t even going to make a dent in that. I don’t know how that happened, but the rise in the breakdown of the family did interestingly seem to correspond with big new government programs implemented in the sixties. Maybe the solution is less big government programs, but you sure aren’t going to hear the suggestion from Obama.
If kids still haven’t learned to be socialists and vote democrat, they must be programmed longer each year.
They’ve created an edumacational monster. Of course, that was the intention, but the monster is even bigger and stronger than they planned. Those in charge are the second, perhaps third generation. They are not only indoctrinated, they are incompetent as well. Most of the good kids I know are schooled in some way at home – whether it be pure home schooling or cyber schooling – and most of the good kids I know from public school seem to be religious. Who woulda thunk it? Raise your hand if you thunk it.
In the future, everyone will be Hitler for fifteen minutes.
So what do the Teacher’s Unions think about this one? No more 3 months off every year even though you are paid $70 large with full benefits? BWAAAAAAA! I say go for it! 12 months of school every year! Get the little cretins off the streets and into the class rooms and make the teachers earn their pay! I’m getting old and crusty!
more money and more time in the class room cannot fix the home life and culture that are the real source of the problems.
it also won’t stop the the over educated and under-common-sensed theoreticians from redesigning education every 6 months until it fails utterly.
We suck at teaching, so more sucky teaching mnakes it all better. Like mrhe economy. We sucked at home lending and caused the markets to crash, so we will get more involved with the markets.
1. suck
2. suck more.
3. ……..
4. profit !!!!
Smart power!
Well said Frank.
I remember having an argument with a public school teacher. It began with my stating that we shouldn’t bus children, that parents who love their children drive them to school. That made him crazy. It ended when I told him that we shouldn’t have public schools at all. My logic was 1. government’s not so good at it, 2.its indoctrination, 3. its not cost effective. 4, It is the God given responsibility of the parent.
I got all the edumacation I need right here, its called a gunnnnn!!

My favorite quote from the article:
“That’s going to cost some money,” Obama said
I think he is starting to realize that stuff costs money. Too bad it is too late!
Slightly OT: I REALLY hate Michelle Obama’s smarmy “eat right” crap….but it’s starting to grow on me. I’m sick of looking at annoying fat women. If this harpie is on a mission to ease my pain -can I really say no that?
REALLY OT: The NYT had an article today about obesity being a very expensive lifestyle choice -and that it’s twice as expensive for a woman to be obese than for a man. Connecting the dots, it made me realize that under ObamaCare it will be the FATTIES -not the old people- who go first. Sorry chunksters, the hippopotami herd must be thinned. If the (R)s can’t get it together, there still might be a silver lining to their black cloud of ineptitude.
When my sister and I were going to school in the 1950s and 60s we went to Catholic schools and our parents paid the tuition somehow, on top of the
school tax they were already paying to support the public schools. We got an excellent education compared to the public schools. Today the difference
is probably much greater. It costs more to educate a public school student and Catholic or other private school tuition is probably much higher.
I have no children at all but I pay school tax – just part of owning a home. I think parents who want to send a child to a private school should get a
voucher to help with tuition or a break on the school tax since their kid isn’t using the public school.
For the last 40 + years children have been going to school longer during the day and longer during the year. Meanwhile scores have gone down, pregnancy, drugs, and violence have continued to rise. Could it be that school can’t replace parents? Could it be that social engineering doesn’t work?
Average teacher salary in Boston $79,415, that’s for 6.5 grueling hours a day, 180 whole days a year!! And he wants them to work more??? What’s next, firing the ones who can’t do their jobs?? Expecting them to pass basic literacy tests??? Telling them to stop reading Rules For Radicals and actually teach kids to speak English?? That’s just outrageous!
Bring back the 1 room school house!
If it was good enough for Tom Sawyer, it’s good enough for your kids!
No, seriously, if your kid’s school only had one teacher and no bureaucrats, you could pay your kid’s tuition with a bushel of turnips or a few chickens, and if your precious darling steps out of line, Parent-Teacher conferences would be much simpler. (teacher leans out of the window) – “Hey Mrs. Smith! Your brat didn’t do his homework again, can I beat him? (distant reply) – “Tan his hide, Mrs. Johnson, and tell him that his Pa will whup him again when he gets home from work!”
