  1. I saw a show on CSPAN once in which the author of a book was talking. He’d started on the book to prove the gender pay gap. When he finished, he’d basically proved it didn’t exist. He had 27 different reasons why men make more than women. One was the death rate (man accept a higher risk than women, and so are much more heavily represented in risky jobs than women, and they tend to be higher pay because of the risk). One was the number of hours per year worked (he gave an example of MDs, and how male MDs average 500 more hours per year than female ones). One was the lack of family leave. A woman 20 years out of college typically has 15 years experience, because she took 5 years off to raise a kid or two to school age. Typical male 20 years out of college has 20 years experience (and companies are interested in actual EXPERIENCE, rather than just time since graduation). He even looked at commute time (men are willing to spend more time commuting to get to a higher paying job than women). In all 27 cases, men do what is needed to get the higher paid job, women don’t. He even had the audience divide up, males on one side females on the other, and asked them to raise their hands in answer to some questions. In every instance, many males raised hands, few if any women did (one such question was “have you ever had a daily commute of over 1 hour each way to get to your job?”).

Then there’s the BS of “the glass ceiling”, in which the claim is made that because 90% of Fortune 500 CEOs are male, there must be discrimination going on. But surveys show that 90% of the people who WANT such jobs are male. THat’s a common mistake by the “glass ceiling” and “gender pay gap” morons. They assume that the desires of males and females are the same, and that the % of each in a particular field should match the overall population. What really needs to be looked at is the % of QUALIFIED candidates applying for jobs.

And as it turns out, in most fields, women make more than men, when you look at similar people (degree, years actual experience, etc.).
