This, and devices that allow measurement to the thousandth of an inch. Greater precision in all forms of measurement (size, mass, time) seems to be the key to human progress. Or a result thereof. Or both.
There’s a lot in the Old Testament about measurements, and about the honesty required in their use — Ezekiel 45, for example. “You are to use accurate scales, an accurate ephah and an accurate bath.” Because it’s important. No thumb on the ephah.
A company I used to work for made decisions using the following rule:
Measure it with a micrometer.
Mark it with a piece of chalk.
Cut it with a hatchet.
They are no longer in business.
But close enough for Government work.
Close enough for Government work!? That’s certainly the VA’s theory.
