Amish men shunned following emergency alert test that outed them for having cell phones
Daily Mail | 10/06/23 | Martha WilliamsAn ex-Amish TikToker revealed that the national smartphone emergency alert got his friends from the religious community in trouble for having phones.
Every US smartphone, television and radio received an alert on Wednesday at 2:18pm ET as part of a nationwide test for an emergency alert system.
Unfortunately for three members of the Amish community, the alert also involved a powerful alarm sound that outed them for having modern devices – which go against their beliefs.
…
‘One guy said the elders were coming in his driveway and they were there to speak with him about something that they heard about him, that he might have to get shunned.
‘Right when that was going on, the alert went off and it was in his pocket. Now he’s getting shunned for both. Whatever they were about to shun him for and also the cell phone.’
I call BS. Many Amish use cell phones for business. It is a necessary and accepted accommodation to living in the modern world. What you usually find is that they turn it on when their work day begins and off in the evening or non-workdays.
Funnier this way.
Even worse if the Elders picked up the phone and quizzed “Jake from State Farm.”
It would be funny if it came from Babylon Bee. Coming from Daily Mail it’s BS.
Ya never know, with some of these Amish ordnungs they got out there. The bishops issue “dueling fatwas,” and if you get shunned in one community, you can always join another that allows whatever you got shunned for. Because Amish have a lot of kids, there’s always Amish communities springing up someplace, and some new communities are more “laid back” about stuff.
I’m shunned almost daily by my wife and/or daughters. Should I be upset?
