  1. Compare the weight of the cow to the weight of the bells; the fraction is trivial; or even better, compare the weight of the cow’s head to the weight of the bell. Unless it’s an osmium foghorn (which it ain’t, natch), it still won’t be that heavy. As for noise, here’s a clue city slicker troublemakers, unhappy cows don’t give as much milk. They’re used to the bells! (Il-numberate meat-heads! Go find something that’s broke and fix it!)

And their solution is GPS? Do they think that doesn’t weigh something, much less cost money?

  2. Cow #2: “Hold on… I can’t understand you. My bell’s too loud!”
    Cow #1: (unintelligible)
Cow #2: “There, it’s off. Now, say again?”
Cow #1: “If you like your bell, you can keep your bell.”
    Cow #2: “Mooooooo.”

  3. The cowbells used in the Swiss study that started the kerfuffle were over-sized ceremonial bells used ONCE A YEAR. The people in the study did not directly monitor the cows’ reactions to the bells – they strapped on the giant, 12-pound ceremonial bells and then exposed the cows to OTHER loud noises. [“The study showed that the large bells that many Swiss cows sport around their necks on ceremonial occasions may actually harm their hearing and interfere with their feeding habits. . . . [T]he scientists observed the cows’ activity, heart rates, head movements, and feeding behavior. Then they exposed the cows to loud noises and observed their reactions.” (Emphasis added.)] Well, sure they are going to get spooked over random loud noises to which they are not acclimated (as they are to the bells.)

Also, in many areas only the lead animal is belled (the origin of “bellwether”) – the remainder of the flock (sheep or goats) or herd (cows) follows the bellwether animal out to pasture and back to the barn. Good luck teaching the herd to monitor GPS signals on their tablets. But what’s a lost cow or two? They will be happy as they fall into ditches, miss their grain feedings and freeze at night.

I am a firm believer in the humane treatment of animals unlucky enough to be delicious, but this dishonest study carried out by two graduate students on just 100 cows proves only the gullibility and imbecility of the Legion of Smug trying to regulate every aspect of human behavior.

Ironically, only cattle lucky enough to be sent to pasture require bells. The logical response to a bell ban would be to pen the entire herd on factory farms – can’t lose track of ’em then. Interfering morons.

  4. Wow 🙂

C.O.B. slaughters — I mean, eviscerates — er, dismantles the so-called science behind the so-called study!
