More on Music

Thanks for the music advice so far. What I’m really looking for are what are some good albums to buy (ones that don’t have one or two worthwhile songs). BTW, what I have now is the Atomship album advertised on my site and I picked up from Best Buy yesterday Nirvana’s Nevermind, P.O.D.’s Sattellite, Shinedown’s Leave a Whisper (the newer albums are cheaper, and I can resist a song named “.45”), and the Matrix Reloaded Soundtrack (it’s two disc, the first being songs from Marilyn Manson, P.O.D., Rage Against the Machine, etc. and the second the orchestrated soundtrack to the movie). Soundtracks to movies seem to be a good way to get a mix of music; any reccomendations there? Orchestrated soundtracks to me are good for when I’m reading and writing, but I want rock for work.
What I’m already planning on getting is some stuff from Offspring, the Beatles, The Doors, Mettalica (what’s their best album?), and Johnny Cash (I grew up listening to my dad play that).
Again, any specific album suggestions would be really appreciated. You readers rock!

  1. For the Doors, Soft Parade is especially good. I have to warn you though,it’s hippy music and I think it attracts monkeys. So if you wake up with long hair craving a banana, don’t say you weren’t warned.
Beatles, the White Album. It was de rigeur during the 70s. Revolver is very good too.
Offspring only seems to have one good CD, Smash. The rest are pretty cheesy.
If you are looking at classic rock, check out Zepplin. I know they’re overplayed, but there’s a reason. Zepplin II is a great album.

  2. The best Metallica album, no holds barred, is the self-titled black album. Ride the Lightning is pretty good too. I’d recommend you purchase the new Guns N Roses greatest hits disc. Besides these two, I’d recommend Alkaline Trio’s “Good Mourning,” either of Puddle of Mudd’s two discs, The Clash’s greatest hits, and Brand New’s “Deja Entendu.”

  3. Admittedly, I’m partial to live tracks, and some people are not, but you can’t go wrong with:
    Ozzy – Live and Loud
Van Halen – Right Here, Right Now
    Pink Floyd – Pulse
    Journey – Captured
Ted Nugent – Double Live Gonzo
REO Speedwagon – You Get What You Play For
Sheryl Crow – Live from Central Park
Jerry Jeff Walker – Viva Terlingua
The Eagles – Hell Freezes Over

  4. STP’s “Core” or “Purple” would be good for you
Metallica’s “Black” if you like their more commercial stuff, “Ride the Lightning” or “Master of Puppets” for the earlier.
If you like P.O.D try Switchfoot

  5. Oh yeah, I forgot, Guns n Roses put out a live album about 6 or 7 years ago. I own it, but can’t remember the name of it. It kicks a lot of ass though. Course there’s always Frampton Comes Alive.

  6. Some of my favorite soundtracks are: The Crow, Spawn, Queen of the Damned, Dracula 2000, Tomb Raider, and a great compilation CD, if you can find it is MTV’s Return of the Rock.
I have a bunch more suggestions, but those are good to start. Let me know if they work out or if you want any other ideas.

  7. Heres some album advice, I recommend buying all 4 based upon your choices
    Sublime – Sublime –
an album you can listen to 10 times in a row and want more of, if you like it then get Sublime – 40oz of Freedom
AC/DC – Back In Black or Greatest Hits
    Awesome simple hard rock
Lynyrd Skynyrd – 20th Century Masters
They were from florida, they have awesome music, and they are a classic biker badass band
Garth Brooks – The Hits Collection
If you like country music at all this is one of the cds to have
Metallica – Black Album (Really has no title, just Metallica titled on it with a black front) –
the best metallica album ever, anything after it sucked anything before it is good, it is the best

  8. as far as rock goes dredg’s el cielo album is great. although its unheard of, and difficult to classify.
but if for any reason one is looking to transcend rock for incredibly talented metal: arcturus’ the sham mirrors. i really can’t help but throw that out there.

  9. Glad to see you acquired some “rage against the machine.” I’m sure the Limey will like you now.
The Beatles- “The White Album” and “Rubber Sole” (which I believe includes “Happiness is a Warm Gun” you gotta love that one!
Pink Floyd – Dark Side of the Moon
    The Eagles – Hotel California
    Steely Dan – Pretzel Logic

  10. If you’re going for Metallica, the self-titled “black album” can’t hurt, but I’d go more for the first three… “Kill ‘Em All,” “Ride The Lightning” and “Master of Puppets” – they’re all better. “Garage Inc.” is good for a collection of covers.
For speed metal, I’d go more for Anthrax’s new one “We’ve Come For You All”, almost any Megadeth, particularly “Rust In Peace,” “So Far, So Good… So What” or “Peace Sells” (they are all being remastered/remixed and rereleased on July 27th with bonus tracks). Exodus’ new one, “Tempo of the Damned” is one fine example of thrash metal as well. You would probably enjoy Iced Earth’s “The Glorious Burden” as well. It’s loaded with Patriotic/Historical themes.
Dave Grohl’s Probot album rocks if you like old-school metal.
    all good work music…

  11. I second all the STP recommendations, but you might want to look into their Greatest Hits disc that came out a few months ago. It’s pretty solid.
Also, Aerosmith’s new disc, Honkin’ On Bobo, is a lot of fun to listen to at work or while driving. It’s a departure from their recent sappy crap- it’s nothing but blues-rock covers, with lots of raw guitar and harmonica stuff. Definitley worth checking out.

  12. What? No Rush so far? I know they’re Canadian, but their music does rock.
    Rush-2112
Describes a world w/o music (WTF?)
    Rush-Moving Pictures
Songs that make you want to play drums (Tom Saywer, Red Barchetta, YYZ, Limelight, ect.)
    Rush-Chronicles
Basically their greatest hits up until the late 80s.
    Rush-Counterparts
Songs that make you want to play a loud guitar Marty McFly style (remember that huge Amplifier?)
    Ned out

  13. Suggestions for good work rock:
Stone Temple Pilots – Core, Purple
Alice in Chains – Facelift, Dirt
White Zombie – Devil Music Vol. 1
And the best Metallica CD is Master of Puppets, followed closely by Ride the Lightning. No disrespect to those who like Black, but you may be too young and/or too musically inexperienced to remember/appreciate MOP.
Almost all new rock (last 5 years) is pretty candy-assed. Most new bands make me say, “Hmm, this isn’t too bad, but there’s something about them that sucks a little bit…are they Christian rock?…a-HAAA! THEY’VE GOT TO BE CANADIAN!!”

  14. I can’t believe all the f***ing GAY music people are suggesting to you!
I can’t believe you got some Limey-a$$ed Rage Against the Machine, you Wanker.
Beatles, Doors, Floyd, Eagles, Zeppelin (ok, not gay, but still…), Ozzy, Van Halen, Journey… Christ Almighty, can’t anybody suggest anything less than 20 years old? Why not just totally GAY OUT and get Rod Stewart and Bon Jovi to go along with Air Supply and the Bee Gees?
Stone Temple Pilots are good. New Santana. Five For Fighting. Foo Fighters.
And then you’ve got to get some good American Country music. Ok, so it’s country, at least it’s Pro-American and Pro-Military. Darryl Worley “Have You Forgotten?”. Toby Keith “Shock ‘n Y’all”.

  15. For Johnny Cash try American IV: The Man Comes Around (his last album before he died), Unchained (has an awesome SoundGarden cover, and I’m not normally even into SoundGarden), I have a ‘best of’ album that’s pretty awesome all the way through. I’ve heard his UnEarthed box set is really good, but it’s too expensive for me. What I’ve heard of his Live From Folson Prison album is excellent, and his song Ragged Old Flag is an kick-ass patriotic song, though I haven’t heard the rest of the Ragged Old Flag album.
For the Offspring I recommend Smash and Ignition, especially if you like their older, less poppy stuff.

  16. If I was starting a music collection now I wouldn’t buy CDs, Frank. You should subscribe to one of the online music services (like iTunes) and download what you want. It’s perfectly legal and you don’t end up with a bunch of music you never listen to; even great CDs are about half filler.
And on top of all that you can play your downloaded music on an MP3 player and burn it onto a CD.
But if you must get actual CDs from the record store … well, you’ve already gotten a ton of advice. Notice that Metallica’s Ride the Lightning and Metallica (“The Black Album”) are consistently mentioned. Both are excellent in my opinion. I eschew The Beatles and The Doors in favor of The Rolling Stones; Beggar’s Banquet, Exile on Main Street, and Let It Bleed are must-haves.
My musical taste runs more towards indie rock and punk than yours does, I think. But some artists that I’d reccommend to anyone are Liz Phair, Social Distortion, The Clash, Johnny Cash, Sleater-Kinney, and System of a Down. Sarah MacLachlan for dinner dates. Brand New and Mudvayne are the best new bands I’ve heard this past year.
    S

  17. Oh, and since you like the Offspring, you might want to check the “Go Ahead Punk, Make My Day” and “The Thought Remains the Same” compilations, which should cost only about $4 or $5 a piece (they are put out by the Offspring’s singer’s record label, Nitro, and both have some decent Offspring songs on there, including a cover of Hendrix’s “Hey Joe”). They’ll both introduce you to some really good bands that you’ll never hear on the radio.

  18. Skimming through the suggestions (my time is valuable), I see AC/DC’s Back in Black, Metallica’s Master of Puppets, and GNR’s Greatest Hits…all of which I would recommend. Might I suggest Rob Zombie’s Hellbilly Deluxe?

  19. Just a couple of very different suggestions than the mainstream rock everyone else is throwing at you.
Me First and the Gimme Gimme’s- Have a Blast album
Punk covers of lame pop songs.
Cowboy Mouth – anything they have done is great. The albums grow on you the more you listen to them.

  20. Jimi Hendrix–.. Band of Gypsys is my favorite album, though all are excellent. If all you know of Jimi comes from the oldies rock radio, you are missing out! Jimi is like religion for me, your results may vary––

  21. Velvet Revolver’s album Contrband isn’t coming out until June 8th (has Guns N’ Roses founding members Slash and Duff, as well as Stone Temple Pilots vocalist Scott Weiland). I’m definitely going to pick that up from what I’ve heard.

  22. Some more suggestions:
The Presidents of the United States of America – I & II : Just good fun rock and roll
Weezer – Weezer and the Green Album : ditto
Dynamite Hack – Superfast : Alt Rock, with one of the funniest songs I’ve heard, “Boyz-N-The Hood,” a melodic cover of a gansta rap ‘song.’ Hilarious.
    And some ladies:
Juliana Hatfield – Gold Stars, 1992 – 2002 : Sweet Voice, nice guitar licks
All Fired Up: The Very Best of Pat Benatar : The (former) Queen of Rock and Roll! (except for the dreadful “All Fired Up” and “Shadows of the Night”)
Veruca Salt – American Thighs : Chicks Rock!
Stars: The Best of the Cranberries, 1992-2002 : An Irish Lass Rocks!

  23. You need to fire up some Deep Purple……..try “In Rock”, “Machine Head” or “Made In Japan”. You’ll hear some of the best guitar playing ever recorded (not too bad for the early 70’s). If you want newer stuff, try the White Stripes – simple bluesy rock….very cool.

  24. You can’t go wrong with any album that Tesla has put out – also, Lynyrd Skynyrd classic stuff speaks for itself, but you should check out their Vicious Cycle CD. Southern Rock at its finest.

  25. Since you have NetFlix (I don’t–yet) see if they have Jimi Hendrix Live at Monterey or anything else by him. Heck, see if they have any of the bands that are being recommended, that way you can get a better feel for the bands before dropping $16 on a CD that might suck–.

  26. As for soundtracks:
For old stuff look for the movie soundtracks for Heavy Metal, FM (as in FM radio) and Vision Quest.
Also check out the 3 soundtrack albums for the TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

  27. Man, NOBODY has even mentioned Blind Melon. Frank, get that, their first album, self-titled, all the songs are good on it. Also, The Clash, Toadies-Rubberneck, Lit-A Place in the Sun, Styx and the band Yes (not all the songs on Yes’ albums are good and remember, the lyrics aren’t supposed to make sense on the older albums, heavy ‘drugs influenced the lyric writer’ days are in effect for those albums. And Audioslave (aka ‘Rage against the Soundgarden’) I am glad at least someone else mentioned Rush. and also Kansas (dust in the wind, travesty, love and miracles, carry on my wayward son and Chicago yeah, maybe not really rock in the modern sense, but they have some really good songs – love ’em.
And if you can stand a bit of tree huggin’ hippy-ish-ness… uh, yeah.. There is a band called Rusted Root- the album is Scorched Sun (I think, my stepson has borrowed my car and the cd is in there.) the music is very enjoyable and they do a song that has some Jimmy Hendrix in there.
Oh yeah, and do not forget Steve Wonders Greatest hits and for pure entertainment Get Arlo Guthries Greatest hits or at least his Alices Restaurant album, good for gits & shiggles anyway.
For soundtracks I have to recommend:
Malcome in the Middle: season one.
    Scrubs: season one.
Due South: season one.(canceled show damn! and you can only buy dvds for the show from mother kissin’ Canada for..! geez!) but the soundtrack can still be purchased in the good old US of A. Some really good songs on this sound track, it is an eclectic mix, but a good one.
and if you like VERY DIRTY LYRICS and AWFUL female singers may I recommend SMASHED GLADYS. (self titled… See, there is the song on there.. uh and the title is – ahem – Legs Up.. It is not porno-ish, more humorus but still kind of dirty. he he.
Anyway, said my peace, put my two-cents or non-sense in. I’m outta here.

  28. Hmm, let’s see here…
    – Either of the Linkin Park discs(don’t bother with the live one or the remix disc though – not bad, but not great)
    – Incubus – Make Yourself. A couple annoying songs, but overall it’s awesome music.
    – Anything by Tool, especially Lateralus. They’ve usually got some weird stuff on each disc, but also some of the best music in existance.
    – If you’re going to grab the Offspring, I’d recommend Americana first, it seems to be the best.
As well, just go into a used CD store and grab anything that strikes your fancy. They’re like $8 each a lot of the time, often less, you don’t need the greatest music in the world at that price, even a few good songs per disc makes it worthwhile.

  29. quick note, I have only referenced the albums that seem to have been neglected. I do have a lot of these other albums mentioned, just trying to round Frank out… That just didn’t sound right….
Ooooh hey, did anyone mention the Kinks or the Black Crows? Also good, btw Frank, if you ever wanted to know who did the song “I’m going to Disneyland” the band name is DADA, and the album is puzzle. (my husband Mark loves that song.) Can we start an IMAO cult and just drink regular untainted (except for some sugar {and maybe some vodka} Koolaid in rememberance of the days as a child when you were denied the gloriousness that was Koolaid?
Okay, you that don’t get that, read ALL of Franks stuff. Grr, Argh!

  30. You should own every album from The Clash. Listen to “Guns of Brixton” really loud before hunting. This is the only band that made really good music about riots and general destruction(see “Revolution Rock”). Watch out for Lberal messages, though, Joe Strummer thought he was a Marxist. He was really just misguided. London Calling is a good album to start with.

  31. S&M by Metallica. You can never go wrong with a good (at the time) metal band backed by an orchestra. Don’t even look at St. Anger, it just sounds like monkeys in a cooking pot cupboard.

  32. 2nd all Rush
    2nd Ride the Lightning
    Black Sabbath:
    Black Sabbath
    Paranoid
    Master of Reality
    Volume 4
    Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
    Sabotage
    (All good songs.)
    Ministry:
    Psalm 69
    Filth Pig
The Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste
In Case You Didn’t Feel Like Showing Up
The Dark Side of the Spoon
P.S. Anybody who thinks Metallica’s Black albumn is their best is a FAG. Anybody who even likes anything after black (load, etc.) is a complete and total Gaywad Fagazoid.
After those albums came out I was ashamed that I ever liked them.

  33. Lessee here.
    Metallica: Anything, aside from Load/Reload.
For something a bit harder, go with KoRn: Follow the Leader, or even Issues.
Powerman 5000’s Tonight the Stars Revolt is great
On the more classic rock front, Frampton Comes Alive is great, as is Boston, by Boston. Van Halen 1984 is great, as is Van Halen: Best of Volume I

  34. A must buy is Demons and wizards, and they only have one album its self titled. Disturbed the sickness is one of the greatest albums i own, if your looking for something softer theres always ziggy stardust and the spiders from mars by david bowie.

  35. Meatloaf: Bat Out of Hell I
Steely Dan: Can’t Buy a Thrill
    Springsteen: Everything but “Nebraska”
    Patty Smith Group
    The Ramones
    The Clash
    The Tubes
The New York Rock and Soul Review: Live at the Beacon
    Blondie: Live in New York
    The Cars
    Peter Gabriel Live
Motown: 25 Hits from 25 Years
    Soundtracks:
    Rock’n’ Roll High School
    Dazed And Confused
    The Commitments
Jesus Christ Superstar: The Original London Cast. (Hippy Music? Yes. But some of the best recorded guitar licks and screaming vocals EVER! Hard to find though…most stores have the movie soundtrack and it’s…not.so.good.)

  36. How about the soundtrack to the all time greatest movie, Highlander?!?!?
It was done by Queen and the title of the album is Some kind Of Magic.
Another great CD is Bare Naked Ladies Greatest hits.
The Smashing Pumkins have a fantastice greatest hits CD out now as well.
Finialy the last two Red Hot Chili Peppers CDs are works of art, Californication and By the Way.
It’s amazing how well a band can play when they get off the dope!

  37. Linkin Park – Hybrid Theory
    Linkin Park – Meteora
Pink Floyd – Dark Side of the Moon
    Any Sublime
    Metallica – Master of Puppets
    Almost any Doors
    Lynard Skinnard – Greatest Hits
And I CANNOT believe no one mentioned the old school band Wishbone Ash – Argus…. my god that is one of my favorite CDs… the guitarists pretty much duel! Someone tell me they like Wishbone Ash.

  38. Okay, If we are branching out to soundtracks to musicals, this is a must recommend to EVERYBODY!
Get the soundtrack to “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat”. It is just fun to listen to. Period.
Also, Phantom of the Opra. (sh*t I almost typed Oprah, what’s that about?)
Anyway, good play, go. see. it. really. bring tissues, or read the book by Gaston La Roux.
One last note, Any of you that have heard the song “One Night in Bangkok” but don’t know where it came from but want to get the album, the soundtrack it’s from is “Chess”

  39. For soundtracks, I love the Daredevil and Punisher soundtracks from Wind-Up. They’re sort of a “Best of” from their top artists. All kinds of good names and stuff on there…
    Evanescence
    Seether
    Saliva
    Chevelle
    Trapt
    Nickelback
    Drowning Pool
Ben Moody’s ONLY solo track to date
    Revis
    The Calling
    Heck, even Moby.
Yeah, so you might wanna check that out.

  40. If you can find these, buy them!
    The Dead Milkmen- Metaphysical Graphitti
    The Germs- M.I.A
The Adicts- The Complete Singles Collection
The Damned- Best of Oddities and Versions
    ADOLESCENTS- Self Titled
    X-Ray Spex- Anthology
G.G Allin and the Murder Junkies-Right to Remain Violent
The Aquabats- The Aquabats vs the floating eye of death
    Oi Polloi- Alive and Kickin’
    Cocksparrer- Ruin Riot
    Television- Marquee Moon
Iggy Pop & The Stooges- Fun House
    good luck, check ebay!

  41. Frank,
Really, for the best in modern music, and to get hip to what all the kids are snappin’ their fingers to, you can’t go wrong with some Gino Vanelli. I highly recommend the Ultimate Collection album. Or, if are really into some of progressive stuff, you can’t go wrong with some Dionne Warwick. “That’s What Friends Are For”? Indeed, Ms. Warwick, Indeed. Lastly, who could forget the incomparable Pablo Cruise, soft-rock legends. I know we all sincerely hope that “Love Will Find A Way”. I know I do. Pansy-Assed? Not hardly.

  42. Essentials (in no particular order):
AC/DC – Let There Be Rock (Bon at his best)
Allman Brothers – Live at Filmore East
Johnny Cash – Live from Folsom Prison
    Cracker – 1st album
Sonic Youth – Goo or Washing Machine
Neil Young – Ragged Glory or Weld
The Replacements – Tim or Pleased to Meet Me
Ramones – All This Stuff and More Vol 1
Reverend Horton Heat – Full Custom Gospel Sounds of
Hank Williams, Sr – Greatest Hits
The Blues Brothers – Briefcase Full of Blues
Clarence ‘Gatemouth’ Brown – Okie Dokie Stomp
Leonard Cohen – I’m Your Man
O’ Brother, Where Art Thou? – Soundtrack
Urge Overkill – Saturation or Stull EP
Iggy Pop – Pop Songs or Brick by Brick
Bodeco – Bone, Hair and Hide
Talking Heads – Remain in Light or More Songs About Buildings and Food
U2 – Wide Awake in America
    B52’s – First Album
    Nirvana – Unplugged
Alice In Chains – Jar of Flies
Warren Zevon – Best of …
    Bruce Springsteen – The River
Led Zeppelin – All albums bar In Through The Out Door
    The Sopranos – Soundtrack
    Rollins Band – Silence
Brian Setzer Orchestra – Guitar Slinger
    Morphine – Yes
Let you know when I think of more…

  43. Lokidoki, the Rusted Root CD you’re thinking of is Cruel Sun. I used to be quite a big fan of RR – I’ve seen them live three times – but I was dissapointed in their most recent work. When I Woke was their first full-length CD release and is, in my opinion, still their best.
In any case it’s not the kind of music I’d reccommend to Frank. It’s very pagan and libertine … think The Grateful Dead meet Carlos Santana.
    S

  44. Both Linkin Park albums are good suggestions. You’ve already got the best new song out there; Shinedown’s “.45”
If you like .45, you’ll like Breaking Benjamin’s “Saturate” album too.

  45. If you like the heavier stuff with some serious texture to it, check out Mushroomhead. 8 members, two singers, and the bassist’s “name” is Pig Benis. No they’re not a Slipknot rippoff.
Also Fear Factory – any one of their albums, vocalist, Burton C Bell, is a master of the etherial howl
Powerman 5000 – Tonight the Stars Revolt and Transform. Lead Singer, Spider, is Rob Zombie’s little bro.
Static-X – Wisconsin Death Trip, lead singer looks like the guy from the Slim Jim Ad.

  46. I can’t believe Metallica’s “…And Justice for All” isn’t getting the love – ‘One’ Kicks Ass.
But if you’re looking for Metallica go with the Black Album or Older. Warning, if your not already a big metal fan, Ride the Lightning is a little intense, though ‘Creeping Death’ would be a great song to drive a tank to.

  47. Sandor @ the Zoo,
    Thank you,
New at this kind of stuff and only commenting once in a blue moon. Definitely recinding the Rusted Root recommendation to Mr. Frank. ‘Cause as I said, Big kinda tree huggin’ Hippy-ish, but very head-bobbing & body-jumping around kind of music. (or in My case, geek what cannot dance but tries to anyway to much amusement for everyone-else music.) But I still recommend “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.” You know, out of the bible kind of story, and just such a hoot to listen to. I’ve been keeping an eye out for it to come into Greensboro or Charlotte so I can go see it finally. Get the soundtrack… GET THE SOUNDTRACK….. Oooohhww (Scary ghost sound.. Spooky…)
Right, being a dork now. Yo, have I recommended getting anything by Beck any album, or Traffic – Low Spark of High Heeled boys?

  48. My contributions:
    Acceptance-black lines to battlefields
    Foo Fihgters-one by one
    Jet-get born
Hoobastank- their 2001 self-titled release & their newest release-the reason
Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band-trouble is…(this is a guitar driven bluesy album, it will definitely get you going)
and when I want to go a bit older I like:
    Boston-don’t look back
    Foreigner-records
Aerosmith(anything from their early years really)

  49. Lokidoki, I agree with the JATD reccomendation. And I didn’t mean to bust on Rusted Root or on you for mentioning them … I just wanted to make sure that Frank didn’t go out and buy music that would cause him to scream “Goddamn Hippies!” every 15 seconds.
Your screen name, by the way, is brilliant.
    S

  50. Try “A Fair Forgery of Pink Floyd” by various new/unsigned artists. A good mix all by itself, they have been paying it on XM Unsigned.
Any Rush put out before 1990. (“Moving Pictures” and “Chronicles” are excellent suggestions)
Metalica’s best work is “Ride the Lightning” and “Master of Puppets”
Audioslave is great too, not quite as wankerous as RATM with Chris Cornell up front.

  51. If you like some of the stuff off of Reloaded, the guy who does Furious Angels, Rob Dougan, has a solo album. It has Furious Angels on it with vocals, which is just outstanding. The whole album’s solid – have it in my car. May be kinda hard to get, though. It’s not exactly hanging out on the Best Buy shelves, last I checked.
    hln

  52. The Shinedown album is just a great cd, I listen to it quite often. Always deserves to be played at high volume. I have a rather wide musical selection, but here are a few I enjoy that I don’t believe anyone has suggested:
Gravity Kills (their first, self titled disk)
    Stabbing Westward: Darkest Days
Cold: Year of the Spider (I don’t actually own this one yet)
The Best of Van Halen Vol 1
Van Halen: For unlawful carnal knowledge
Well, there’s at least a few.

  53. QUICK UPDATE AND THIS APPLIES TO ALL OF YOU..
If you EVER go to see the Blue Angels fly at any Airforce Base show… Take BOSTON’S first album, self titled, put your headphones on. KEEP THEM ON! PLAY IT OVER AS LONG AS THEY ARE FLYING! Truely a spiritual expirience(or just totally bitchin’ – did I mention I’m a valley girl?), I have seen them at least twice many (centuries) ago when I was a teen-age girl, at Marimar Airforce base in San Diego. and the show completely rocks when “Smokin'” is ringing in your ears… or any other songs from their self titled album. God it was cool!

  54. Frank J: Metallica sucks, always has – always will. But you must check out the new Switchfoot album, “The Beautiful Letdown”. Serious music, great lyrics, excellent production. Also, “Exodus” by Andy Hunter is a killer techno album. Some of his work appears in the Matrix movie soundtracks.
    Zeb

  55. I saw nedschnittt posted some Rush, but has anyone said Dreamtheater? I’m a drummer and prog rock fan, and Neil Peart and Mike Portnoy can’t be beat!
Dreamtheater – Scenes from A Memory
    Train of Thought
    A Change of Seasons
    Six Degrees of Inner Turbulance
Liquid Tension Experiment – Both albums
Any and all Rush albums ( but start with Moving Pictures and Permanent Waves )

  56. hmm, been looking through my cd collection-
my soundtrack section is not as varied as I thought. Most of it is orchestrated music, the only non-orchestrated I have that I really like to listen to is the soundtrack for the movie “The Commiments”

  57. If not the best album ever (especially when considered as true concept album)it is certainly very near the top: it’s Jane’s Addiction’s “Nothing’s Shocking”. All that other Perry Farrell stuff is pure crap and tripe, but without a doubt, Nothing’s Shocking is one of the best collections of music ever. Period.

  58. I’ve got to go with almost everyone else so suggest a Metallica album and say the untitle black album. I’d also suggest some Static-X and maybe some Disturbed and Korn for those days…you know. All are a little harsh but still good.
Soundtrack wise, the MI:2 soundtrack, the Daredevil soundtrack, and the Punisher Soundtrack all got my attention.
A last tip, anything on the WindUp lable besides Creed’s newst contribution to the stupid cd’s pile is a safe bet.
(Why would you suggest the 8-Mile soundtrack to a person who listens to rock?)

  59. Okay, you already have plenty in the typical ‘Rock’ catagory, so I’ll go for others:
In the spirit of Mr Cash, try a listen to Patsy Cline’s greatest hits.
Try some blues, like Muddy Waters. Or B.B.King, if you’d like a more recognized name.
If you’re at all interested in bluegrass, the ‘O brother where are thou?’ soundtrack really is a good place to start.
If gospel doesn’t make you break out in hives, try the Blind Boys from Alabama.
I found Reel Big Fish: Turn The Radio Off to be funny myself, but it can be distracting if you want to be concentrating on something else.
Offbeat acts to approach with caution:
The Rouges: Live in Canada, Eh?
Dead Can Dance (warning: zone out music)
    Squirrel Nut Zippers
    Big Bad Voodoo Daddy

  60. Here are artists/bands I like:
    Led Zeppelin
    Jimmy Page / Robert Plant
    Jimmy Page
    Robert Plant
    John Paul Jones
    The Firm
    David Bowie
    Genesis (with Peter Gabriel)
    Peter Gabriel
    Annie Lennox
    Lyle Lovett
    Altan
    Danu
    Randy Newman (an acquired taste)
    The Cure
    Steely Dan (through Gaucho)
Pink Floyd (through The Final Cut)
I’ve only heard individual songs from the following, but what I’ve heard is good:
    Porcupine Tree
    Afro Celt Sound System

  61. Definitely get Pink Floyd’s “The Dark Side of the Moon” My all time favorite album.
Pink Floyd also has the Album’s “The Wall” and “Wish you were here” which are both excellent (every single song is amazing)
I’d point you to some Hendrix, The Who, the Doors, The Beatles (White Album, Abbey Road, or pretty much any album ^-^).
My favorite soundtrack of all time must be “The Royal Tennenbaums” soundtrack, with songs like “Ruby Tuesday” by the Rolling Stones, “Judy is a Punk” by the Ramones, “Stephanie Says” by the Velvet Underground, “Hey Jude” by the Beatles, and other great songs. definitely check that out!

  62. Dark Side of the Moon was great, when I was stoned and afore I figured it should be nuked. I’d pick Animals- or if not-
Go with The Wall. In fact, buy the DVD.
Rush from Moving Pictures and back, you can’t go wrong. 2112 brings a tear to my eye. But if you haven’t you might want to try All The Worlds A Stage to give you an idea.
Queer ear for the straight guy- early Queen (I, II, Night, Day) or David Bowie’s David Live (which is very cool in that it’s got a real funky feel without sounding like jazz, which I really don’t like).
    I would cry if I lost… hmmm…
    Warren Zevon: Genius:
“and if California slides into the ocean
like the mystics and statistics say it will
I predict this motel will be standing
    until I pay my bill.
Don’t the sun look angry through the trees?
Don’t the trees look like crucified leaves?
Don’t you feel like Desparado, under the eaves?”
Plus “Exciteable boy”, “Lawyers guns and money”, blah blah etc. etc.

  63. BTW, no offense to Jessi, I just have way too much time on my hands tonight, so let me help:

    http://www.purevolume.com/fromchaos
So those are some of my favorites, just to name a few. These are must haves in any rock collection. I’m sure I left some great ones out but this should be enough to get you started. Happy listening!!
First of all, there are maybe 5 of the first 20 records he/she lists that are worth the money.

  64. Ahh yes, I forgot Warren Zevon (may he rest in peace). Roland the headless thompson gunner, excitable boy, werewolves of london… Great songs!
The Dire Straits are pretty good too
Rolling Stones – Beggars Banquet (I think that’s the one, it has “Street Fightin’ Man”, “Sympathy for the Devil”, “Jumpin’ Jack Flash”.

  65. How could I forget the Black albumer? Ugh. Frank, if you’re a metalhead, metallica is a good place to start, but I personally am a bigger fan of Pantera (who yes, did break up sniff). For some incredibly wicked guitar action, buy Black Label Society’s “The Blessed Hellride” album. Their guitarist is Zakk Wylde, who was formerly the guitarist of Ozzy and is absolutely INCREDIBLE!

  66. Music Critic Critic, please tell me you’re joking about Ravi Shankar. Though I don’t know why anyone would suggest him for this particular list. Oh well, maybe I’ve only heard his boring stuff. ;D or maybe it was his daughter anoushka. I mean, I love Indian music but ragas get kinda monotonous.

  67. maggie, the Little Sizzle has been trying to get me to listen to Shankar for a while, she raves about him/her (?). she mellows out to this music.
say, Music Critic Critic w/ WAY too much time on your hands, no, that’s not her boyfriend, but From Chaos does include family members, and you will hear me on the upcoming album, so there was a plug in there after all. 🙂 but in our humble, unbiased opinion, they’re great.

  68. SOUNDTRACKS!
Two of the best Movie soundtracks ever would have to be the ones for Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch. Both very eclectic mixes of music that are quite nifty.

  69. Some of my favorites cds are anything by Lynyrd Skynyrd, Marshall Tucker Band, Charlie Daniels, Doobie Brothers, Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, Don Williams, Hank Williams, Jr., Kenny Wayne Sheppard…I guess I just basically like lots of southern rock and old country songs…some new country songs are okay, too.
I am not a huge contemporary Christian music fan (most of it is pop-sounding music which I cannot stand), however, I do recommend Third Day. They were the first (and so far the only) Christian rock band cd that I have purchased, but it is excellent. I recommend them. Great music and great lyrics. Can’t go wrong there. But, I agree with a lot of you, some of this new “rock” music just sucks. It all sounds the same. I refuse to listen to it. These little “rock” bands are a dime a dozen and they aren’t very good, especially those bands where the lead singer sounds about 15 years old. I just can’t get into that.

  70. I’m noticing that nobody mentioned any alternative country acts. There are two categories of that. One is dirty pot smoking liberal hippy country, like Steve Earle, Emmylou Harris, and the Dixie Chicks. The other is Texas Country, which is apparently big in Texas, Oklahoma, and not too many other places. My brother got me into these groups. Some of the Texas groups are pretty patriotic, though for reference, they also swear a lot more and sing about pot more than most country singers. Anyways, some groups, songs, and/or albums:
    Cross Canadian Ragweed –
1.) Live at Billy Bob’s, Texas: “The President Song,” “The Boys from Oklahoma,” “Bang My Head,” “Carney Man”
    2.) Soul Gravy
    3.) Purple
4.) Live at the Wormy Dog
    Pat Green
    1.) Three Days
2.) Live at Billy Bob’s Texas
    3.) Wave on Wave
    Jason Boland and the Stragglers
1.) Live at Billy Bob’s Texas
    2.) Pearl Snaps
(he has others, but I don’t remember the titles)
    Reckless Kelly
    1.) Millican
2.) Live at Billy Bob’s (just like everybody else)
    Radney Foster
    Jack Ingram
    Jerry Jeff Walker
Also, I highly recommend Dropkick Murphys, Flogging Molly, and the Real McKenzies, a trio of Celtic punk bands that kick ass.
