While you’re watching the big game tonight, here’s a discussion topic: Has football run it’s course?
They can run the ball and they can throw the ball. Also, they can at times kick the ball. After forty-one years of Super Bowls, haven’t we see every single variation of those plays? Really, what new and exciting thing can they do?
Nothing. I say it’s either time to retire this football thing or come up with some new type of play (maybe one where they roll the ball).
What do you think?

Ever see “Running Man”? Lets add a ball to that, and have it involve terrorists….just my two cents:).
I wasn’t even aware the Super Bowl was today until I read the score online.
I’ve always preferred Ice Hockey. How cool would Golf be if they had Goalies and allowed Body Checks?
BLASPHEMY!!! What’s next honor killings?
give each player a firearm of their choice. that should make it interesting
Um, for clarification, do you recall that “Running Man” always had a common theme for the “guest participants”? Heh.
This, from the grown man turning blue in the face waiting for the next Harry Potter book to be released…how many browsers did you just lose with that careless remark?
We tried having something different called the XFL. I think anything that tries spelling extreme as Xtreme is doomed to failure. Otherwise anything new confuses and scares us. Uhg, fire bad! (stomp stomp)
//I say it’s either time to retire this football thing or come up with some new type of play (maybe one where they roll the ball).//
That’s called bowling…and there’s a lot less hitting of other people involved in that sport, so…no, I don’t think your idea will replace football in any way shape or form. ‘Cause honestly, besides my grandfather, who watches bowling on TV anymore? :o)
Chicago Bears…worst team EVER in the Super Bowl…Good Grief!!!
Frankj, how could you say such things! As a female football viewer I say there’s nothing more intensely hot than a bunch of guys in armor beating the hell out of each other. Football is our mordern equivalent of the melee/gladitorial bouts in the days of yor. Yummy!!!
Never enough football. Between my son’s high school team, college and pro, autumn is my favorite time of year. I never watch the Pro-Bowl, too sad. It doesn’t really matter that the Vikings always suck, they’ll always be my favorite team. That’s football. NFL sunday ticket next year. Woohoo!
Well, in terms of sheer boredom – frankly, if it weren’t for beer, baseball would be dead. American Football would be the last to go. In some ways I see sports rivalries as the last of the city state war instincts within borders played out harmlessly. While I’m not a game fan (I make a distinction between “game” and “sport”), I think that a culture that lacks this competition and doesn’t replace it with something more noble and riskier (air racing, etc.) will be less human in a very bad way – Far too soft and urbane. In terms of “get a life”, I dislike professional sports but I hate Boston/ etc. more.
Living near Chicago, I considered investing in a bigger HDTV before the game… Now I’m bemoaning recording it on a $4 archival DVD when a 50 cent cheapy 2-play-laser-rot-special would have been sufficient to review the commericials. There’s “winning ugly” and just plain ugly. The only good thing is that Tank won’t get a superbowl ring to take to prison with him.
College Football –
It’s easier to feel a sense of loyalty. They won’t stab you in the back by moving to another city. The system (with salaries and the draft) also isn’t manipulated so that the teams rotate between being good and sucking every few years.
Not having playoffs to pick a winner makes it less fair, but it also gives you a lot more to argue over in your spare time (and really, isn’t that the point?).
This may be difficult given your school’s football team, but pick another you have the closest connection to and root for it.
Yeah. Let’s also get rid of Apple Pie and whistling at pretty girls. That’s a GOOOOOOD idea.
You know, people say the XFC failed because they tried to make it too much like the WWF. But I say they didn’t make it ENOUGH like WWF. I don’t care if the league is filled with highschool or college football level athletes (like XFC was) if those athletes are beating each other with baseball bats wrapped in barbed-wire! Maybe they could have trap doors that shoot fire and pits that open up like Battle Bots! See? WAY better.
I love football. There really isn’t an NFL team I hate, so to speak, but certain teams have a fanbase that are just too obnoxious & make me want to commit unspeakable acts to them.
But I love football WAY more than baseball. Just look at the big game yesterday: do they ever call a football on account of rain? No! Not even snow deters them. And anyone that dismisses football as barbaric has no sense of strategic planning.
It’s the perfect American-style sport; it’s like combining chess with rugby…where else are you going to find that kind of ingenuity but here?
I’ve always endorsed combining the sports of Football, LaCrosse and Paintball into one. If you score a touchdown, your whole team gets to take PCP to supercharge the next drive. It would encourage Excellence.
The “X” in XFL didn’t stand for “Xtreme” (despite what Homer Simpson says). Technically it didn’t stand for anything. It was just an X.
I think that we need Mutant League football, where, when a guy gets tackled, he friggin’ EXPLODES and has to go back to the rejuvenation anks for an hour. Of course, we’d need mutants… and rejuvenation tanks… for that to work. Until that shining day, cutting-edge military powered armor will do the trick just fine. Imagine football where the guys are running at 20mph and can jump ten feet into the air!
