I think they used to ward off vampires that way.
(You sprinkle millet or other small grains on your door step and the vampire has to collect and count every grain before he can enter your house to get you.)
Also, you could steal one of his socks and he’d search till doomsday trying to find it again – sounds kind of OCD-ish to me.
Seems to me Googling askew is no worse than Googling unkempt.
