  1. I think the pink submarine bit really did happen to a sub fleeing the Philippines; it’s hard to remember. I’ve read so many sub stories. The reality of Word War II US subs in the Pacific was often crazy, bad and good. The casualty rate was awful (in two senses of the word). Bad torpedoes, Harder, Wahoo, Barb, Sam Dealy, “Lucky” Fluckey whose men blew up a train, etc. Of course, it was a Brit that “broke the bank at Monte Carlo” when they sank a German minelayer from outside the harbor.
