Earth’s Inner Core May Have Started Spinning Other Way: Study
Phys.org | Jan. 24, 2023 | Daniel Lawler

Deep below the surface, the Earth’s inner core may have changed direction, new research suggests.

Far below our feet, a giant may have started moving against us.

Earth’s inner core, a hot iron ball the size of Pluto, has stopped spinning in the same direction as the rest of the planet and might even be rotating the other way, research suggested on Monday.

Roughly 5,000 kilometers (3,100 miles) below the surface we live on, this “planet within the planet” can spin independently because it floats in the liquid metal outer core.

Exactly how the inner core rotates has been a matter of debate between scientists—and the latest research is expected to prove controversial.

What little is known about the inner core comes from measuring the tiny differences in seismic waves—created by earthquakes or sometimes nuclear explosions—as they pass through the middle of the Earth.

Seeking to track the inner core’s movements, new research published in the journal Nature Geoscience analyzed seismic waves from repeating earthquakes over the last six decades.

The study’s authors, Xiaodong Song and Yi Yang of China’s Peking University, said they found that the inner core’s rotation “came to near halt around 2009 and then turned in an opposite direction”.

“We believe the inner core rotates, relative to the Earth’s surface, back and forth, like a swing,” they told AFP.

“One cycle of the swing is about seven decades”, meaning it changes direction roughly every 35 years, they added.

They said it previously changed direction in the early 1970s, and predicted the next about-face would be in the mid-2040s.

The researchers said this rotation roughly lines up with changes in what is called the “length of day”—small variations in the exact time it takes Earth to rotate on its axis.

Rumb-a-Dumb-Dumb

In my email in-box — not, mind you, in the spam folder — was an ad for a bathtub for “under $500!”

How demented do those scammers have to be to expect that I’d think, “Oy… Er… This sounds like a completely trustworthy company and offer”?

“They’ll deliver a bathtub to my house and install it for under $500? What could go wrong?”

“Let me just pull out my credit card and give ’em a ring.”

If any of these babes met one, would one be able to afford them?

Clothes.

Parties.

Assuming one is not Tom Brady or Brad Pitt.

(Brad Pitt may be a bad example.)

I just can’t see keeping Giselle happy. Sorry. I’d do her proud, but I wouldn’t make her proud.

ICE Admits It Has ‘No Records’ For Hundreds Of Thousands Of Illegal Immigrants Released With Electronic Monitors
Daily Caller | 12/28/2022 | Jennie Taer

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) admitted it has “no records” of hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants released into the country with electronic tracking devices, the agency said in a Dec. 22 letter to Syracuse University’s Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC).

ICE informed TRAC that it had “no records” of the 377,980 individuals monitored by the agency’s “Alternatives to Detention” (ATD) program used to electronically track illegal immigrants released into the country. TRAC had asked for data via a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request on those in ATD custody from the start of fiscal year 2019 to August 2022.

“ICE’s response that they could no longer find records on immigrants in Alternatives to Detention (ATD) that they had previously released came as a shock, particularly after they informed us recently that they had been misleading the public for several months by releasing extremely inaccurate ATD data. The agency really needs to come clean. The American public deserves to have accurate data about the ATD program,” TRAC assistant Professor Austin Kocher told the Daily Caller News Foundation.

ICE started the ATD program in 2004 to monitor illegal migrants released into the country using ankle monitors, GPS tracking and cellphones. With limited detention space, ICE relies on the program to hold those awaiting the years-long backlogs in immigration courts.

Saturday Night Hootenanny

“Howdy boys got something special for you tonight. Looks like Mr. Walrus got himself an Obscury from Oppo for the song “Ces’t plane pour moi” which Walrus said he had at least 25 versions. Well, call him a liar cause he sent me a list and I couldn’t even find all of them on Youtube. I filled in a couple he will probably soon get but the list topped out at 40. It’s not a long song so timewise it’s not a long Hootenanny so stick around for all of the versions, there are some serious wild ones in there. Enjoy.”

Nah. They Wouldn’t Do That Here.

Police Seize on Covid-19 Tech To Expand Global Surveillance

Associated Press via ABC | December 20, 2022

JERUSALEM — Majd Ramlawi was serving coffee in Jerusalem’s Old City when a chilling text message appeared on his phone.

“You have been spotted as having participated in acts of violence in the Al-Aqsa Mosque,” it read in Arabic. “We will hold you accountable.”

Ramlawi, then 19, was among hundreds of people whom civil rights attorneys estimate got the text last year at the height of one of the most turbulent recent periods in the Holy Land. Many, including Ramlawi, say they only lived or worked in the neighborhood, and had nothing to do with the unrest. What he didn’t know was that the feared internal security agency, the Shin Bet, was using mass surveillance technology mobilized for coronavirus contact tracing, against Israeli residents and citizens for purposes entirely unrelated to COVID-19.

In the pandemic’s bewildering early days, millions worldwide believed government officials who said they needed confidential data for new tech tools that could help stop coronavirus’ spread. In return, governments got a firehose of individuals’ private health details, photographs that captured their facial measurements and their home addresses.
