I’m trying to update my blacklist to stop comment spam, but I get this error message “Could not save your blacklist data: Got a packet bigger than ‘max_allowed_packet'”
I just did the SP2 upgrade; any idea if this relates?

I’ve been using SP2 since a couple days after it was released, and I’ve had no problems. I use my computer for everything, even an ftp server, but still no problems with SP2. Of course, I have the firewall turned off and am running my own firewall, so… you know….
Depends–did you upgrade your server or your desktop to SP2? If the server, well, that’s what you get for hosting with Bill Gates.
What’s happening is that your server is telling you that you’re sending it more information in one chunk than is allowed. I’m assuming you’re using Moveable Type and MT Blacklist, since you update it with a gargantuan file.
Try copying the list to a text file updating half the list at a time. If this fixes it, it was complaining about the size of the form data you were posting.
If not, then I dunno. It might be something related to SP2. Try using Firefox. If that fails, well, get somebody to install Linux on that sucker. Or get a Mac. I’m sick of dealing with Windows crap.

Microsoft has released a statement saying that, with Windows XP home and pro SP2, 10% of the software that worked on SP1 will cease to function correctly, if at all. Naturally, Microsoft, being the shafts they tend to be, included fixes for their gaping security holes in SP2 as well. My guess is that the 10% of programs that won’t work all have a close Microsoft competitor doing the same thing.
So your options, as presented by Microsoft: Either uninstall (rollback) SP2 and leave your computer open to all kinds of worms, viruses, and hackers, or uninstall your old blacklist program and get Microsoft’s version which, I’m sure, costs about 4 times as much. Lousey, shadey, dingleberry business practices…If Teddy were still around, Microsoft would be one of them trusts that would be busted. And obviously if Taft were still around, but for those of you who know your history, Teddy is the one who would decide if it was a bad monopoly or not. Blah, I’m done. Gotta get back to reading the archived editorials…Just found this site a week ago and I have a lot of catching up to do!
If you’re using MT-Blacklist, I’m going to presume that the message you’re seeing is in the MT-Blacklist browser display, rather than being a Windows popup. If so, then it’s not SP2, but a Blacklist internal problem.
That said, I dunno what the real root cause might be.
Unless you’re hosting your blog on your SP2 patched machine, which I’m assuming you’re not, then SP2 has nothing to do with it. The problem is probably with whatever blacklist/blog software you’re using, so you might want to make sure you have the latest and greatest version of it installed on your server.
For a quick diagnostic test, you might try adding just one item and see if it gives you the same error. If it does, then you should probably re-install/upgrade your blogware. If it adds the item without any trouble, then you might want to trim your current blacklist (ditch the oldest items?) before you add new ones.
Sandy (above) has some good ideas, too. You could try updating it piecemeal.
I’m no fan of Microsoft, but I tend to doubt that SP2 has anything to do with the problem you’re having.
If you use Internet Explorer to update your blacklist, do like Sandy says and get Firefox.
I did the SP2 update 2 weeks ago on my Toshiba laptop using the free CD from Microsoft and have had no problems. It is VERY IMPORTANT to turn off all Firewalls, Anti Virus programs, be disconnected from the internet and not be running any other programs when installing the upbate. Then if a some other program gives you any trouble try uninstalling it and reinstallong it after doing a restart of your puter.
uh… not to be condescending or anything, but what does SP2 have to do with MT-Blacklist (I’m assuming that’s what you’re using for comment spam).
MT (and in turn, MT-Blacklist) are server-based, so as tempting as it is to blame Microsoft for the problem, it’s a blacklist issue…
Guessing out of the blue, since you said it occurred AFTER you tried to update your list, you’ve probably got a broken regex that’s stalling it. try getting the most recent default list from Jay Allen or from my site. Mine might work better for you, too… the regexs are all valid and powerful.
Have you upgraded MT-Blacklist lately? If so, did you upgrade to the newest version, because that would definately cause problems.. the newest version is intended for MT 3.x and isn’t compatible with MT 2.x.
anyway… let me know how it works out…

Also, remember to unplug your microwave and toaster, tune your television to an empty UHF channel with “snow” and max the volume, carefully check the diaphragm for holes, turn off all the lights and be sure NOT to be standing barefoot in a puddle of saltwater. Oh, and don’t forget the frogman suit and spatula!
Just do it quickly. Kenneth has told me that the frequency will be rotating again soon…
If you haven’t already fixed it by now, I might offer another take on this problem:
Try updating your blacklist file on the server directly, instead of cutting and pasting the text into the box. There is a limit on how much data you can send to a server at any one time to prevent denial of service attacks. You’re blacklist is probably just too big for the server you’re hosting on.
Edit this file on your server manually, then FTP it back up. The browser interface is just a simpleton interface to make it a little more convienient for you to edit it.

I’m not sure if it lets you but you need to uninstall it. It messes with a lot of things and totaly changes the firewall. If you do anything other than checking email on you computer then SP2 is nothing but troubble.
