If Fred Thompson Doesn’t Win, It’s All This Guy’s Fault

John Hawkins has an interview with Fred Thompson’s campaign manager.
Who are these people not supporting Fred Thompson, anyway? Do Republicans not like conservatives anymore or something? If Fred Thompson doesn’t win the nomination, I’m going to blame all of you, my readers, for not doing enough, and I’m going to be mad.
But not as mad as Fred Thompson.

  1. I am pretty sure that is exactly what this interview disproved, RK. A lot of people just vote for the guy they heard of. And RG is all over the news as the front runner. So people will vote for him, as he is the guy they think “has a chance”. It’s stupid logic really. Especially when none of the Republicans are conservatives (except Fred).

  2. Right, i read the interview, but I am not seeing any evidence that Fred’s message is getting out. And as a Fred supporter, this is very frustrating. I just don’t think he has been performing as strongly as I would have hoped and feel that the campaign should be more aggressive. He and his campaign may be working hard (and his campaign manager can say whatever he wants), but not much has come out of it. Maybe it’s because I live in a region of the country where we’re not seeing much of anything from anyone (except for crazy Ron Paul signs all over town).

  3. How ’bout we all wait a few months before we bury the Thompson candidacy? Most people are not crazed political junkies like us, the people who read this site (and vent here) every day.
Give the ordinary folks some time. They won’t care ’til after the 1st of the year, at the earliest, around May at the latest.

  4. It’s always nice to see a (mostly) serious post from Frank J.
And, as usual, he’s right. All campaigns run on money and on word of mouth. The Thompson campaign has been a grass-roots effort from day one. Before, actually. In other words, his supporters -are- the campaign. I hear a whole lot of complaining about Thompson not doing enough, but I wonder how many of those complaining are signing up as volunteers, making phonecalls, sending money, passing out information, writing their local newspapers, etc.

  5. I think you may be confused about who or what Fred Thompson is. Fred Thompson is that cool actor dude who can really deliver his lines good, awesome conservative former Senator, and current sleepy Presidential candidate. While I like Fred just fine, I don’t think he (the real he not the actor guy) can’t pull off the Presidential thing. Really there are millions of awesome people in the US who would be great Presidents based on there political philosophies, but they are just not gonna cut it for President. I think Fred falls into this category. So does, Huckabee, Hunter, sometimes Tancrazy, and even perhaps (if he gets his lithium regularly) Paul.
I was going to put Grampa McCain in that category; but, I think McCain actually rises to the next level with Romney and Giuliani. Of these, I personally think Romney is the one who best fits the conservative agrenda. But many believe we should vote Guiliani based on the fact that he may be the only one who can beat Hillary. Personally, I kinda think that calculus feels a little like selling out. But thats just me.

  6. I agree with those who state Fred simply hasn’t put up enough to show he’s a serious candidate. He started too late and has made some really big boo boos.
I think Huckabee is the guy to watch.
I keep pulling for Fred, but he just isn’t getting the job done. RG has cooked his own goose too.
If either Fred or Huckabee get the nomination, I would vote for them.

  7. #11 — with Huck’s taxation record and admitted nannystateism, not to mention his record and policies on illegal immigration, I’m confused about how he beats, say, Romney, for example.
Happy that Fred’s your first choice, but really, at least Romney has owned up and called the majority of his stupid decisions mistakes.
Huck just keeps saying he’s misunderstood.

  8. I’ve blogged for the guy which is as much as I can do right now. Fred is the only candidate I support without reservation. Why isn’t he winning? My guess is a perception that he can’t and so the money and the press go elsewhere.
It’s not yet a blog campaign. Maybe in 2012 it will be. The press still has the say in what the public sees and talks about and what they want is conflict. The Evangelical vs. Mormon story line is exciting so that’s where they’re spending their time, not because it’s good for the voters.
For cryin’ out loud, they actually burned a question in the last debate on the Confederate flag, probably because they thought it could get some racial antagonism going.
Fred did the right things for the right reasons, but perhaps at the wrong time. I’m still hopeful for a surge, though. I won’t stop doing what I can until Fred decides we were not worthy of him or until his glorious reign has concluded with the nuking of the Moon.

  9. I like Fred, I’m probably going to vote for him if he is still viable by the Illinois Primary (Yeah, we moved ours up to Feb 5, which means we might actually be able to vote for a change!)
However, as someone who has been involved in GOP politics since 1980, I can see he made some serious tactical mistakes. He got started too late. He snubbed NH voters by announcing on Leno instead of participating in the debate. His debate performances have been, well, lackluster. (I think that has as much to do with the awful formats as anything he’s done.)
Under normal circumstances, he could probably make up lost ground, but the whole primary process is so compressed that we’ll be stuck with a nominee before we knew what hit us.
My current preferences for the GOP nomination are
    1) Thompson
    2) Huckabee (I can live with him)
    3) Romney (Still suspicious about the Mormon thing)
    4) McCain (Solid, but has done some things I don’t like.)
    5) Guliani (and I might be looking at third party candidates if he’s the nominee.)

    My list:
    1) Thompson
    2) Duncan Hunter (From what little I know about him)
    3)Giuliani
    4)Romney
    5)McCain
6)Huckabee (If he gets the nomination I might vote Libertarian Party.)

  11. Actually, I don’t think Rudy can beat Hillary under any circumstances… so I might as well vote my conscience.
I know this much, If I was for impeaching Bill Clinton for his bad behavior, but then I ignore Rudy’s bad behavior, I would be a hypocrite.

  12. Where is this “Thompson grassroots effort” I hear about from the conservatives? How much money did he raise this quarter? Less than Paul’s $10 million entirely from individuals? Plus a $300,000 blimp?
    Yeah, that’s what I thought.

  13. It’s pretty obvious that the strategy is to peak @ the right time – whether that works out remains to be seen & we’ll know, once the votes are counted & the nominee’s announced. I support Fred because he’s right on the issues, & he does have the strongest slate of policy initiatives of the candidates. I’m biased, however I think he comes across well during debates & interviews. When I look to the left, I will vote for whomever comes out of the republican nomination process – unless it’s Ron Paul! Then, I’ll vote for the “republican Liberman!!!” (I’ll also arrive @ the polls on my unicorn…)
