When Has The Phrase “A Darkness Spread Across The Land” Ever Been Followed By “And They Lived Happliy Ever After”?

First rule of blogging: Don’t quote Ayn Rand.

Not that her writing’s not rife with excellently-stated points, it’s just that she never once constructed a sentence that could stand alone without its surrounding context.

But I break that rule now, because something unspeakable is looming on the horizon, and quoting Atlas Shrugged is the only adequate way I can think of to put my abject horror into words.

Earth Hour 3 approaches.

Please indulge me:

“There were not many lights on the earth below. The countryside was an empty black sheet, with a few occasional flickers in the windows of some government structures, and the trembling glow of candles in the windows of thriftless homes. Most of the rural population had long since been reduced to the life of those ages when artificial light was an exorbitant luxury, and a sunset put an end to human activity. The towns were like scattered puddles, left behind by a receding tide, still holding some precious drops of electricity, but drying out in a desert of rations, quotas, controls, and power-conservation rules.

[…]

The plane was above the peaks of the skyscrapers when suddenly, with the abruptness of a shudder, as if the ground had parted to engulf it, the city disappeared from the face of the earth. It took them a moment to realize that the panic had reached the power stations – and that the lights of New York had gone out.”

These hedonistic luddites want to symbolically roll back every inch of human progress since Edison was awarded US Patent #223,898 on January 27, 1880.

Which makes me want to screw light bulbs into every orifice of the aforementioned luddites and then hardwire them to 120 volt AC.

But I’ll settle for some symbolism, because, unlike them, I respect and admire the customs, foundations, and institutions of human civilization.

What I’d LIKE to do, is re-work that video so that the soundtrack reflects the disgust and revulsion a thinking person should feel at the sight of the world’s greatest cities being plunged into darkness.

Problem is, I have no video-editing skills. Or even software.

Some I’m begging the readership to throw in on this one.

If you have an idea for an appropriate soundtrack for this video – like theme music from Friday the 13th, or REM’s “End of the World As We Know It”, or just screams of terror – toss it in the comments.

If you have video-editing skills and can re-do the auditories to better match this video atrocity, then put it together, upload it to YouTube, and drop a link in the comments. And don’t feel like you have to use the WHOLE video – at over 3 minutes, it’d be kinda tedious and unwieldy to work with. Slice, dice, edit, chop, mix, and match at your convenience.

If I have to settle for merely textually skewering these neo-hipster eco-tards, I’ll make do. But if y’all can help me whip up something a little more multi-media, I’d take it as a kindness and be much obliged.

  1. I might have the skills you’re looking for, though I’m not certain. Do you want to re-cut the video, or just change the soundtrack (the REM song is a good choice) and overlay some sense-returning text? or… what, exactly?

  2. On March 28th we should all do our part to combat the terrors of global warming. Crank up the AC full blast in the house and throw open all the windows. Leave the fridge door open all day. Drive your car extra fast down the highway for several hours to create refreshing cooling breezes for the planet. Don’t forget to properly inflate those tires first!

Seriously, how does turning off the lights on a bridge or highway while the rest of the city is lit up like a Christmas tree do anything but make driving dangerous for people on the bridge or highway? How do we know that the skyscraper with the lights going off every couple floors is observing Earth Hour, and that it’s not just the cleaning crew finishing up for the night?

  3. That is the stupidist thing I’ve ever seen. These people that believe in climate change would love to have us all live like they did in the stone ages. I don’t want to do that, and I should be free to choose to not live that way. If these freaks want to live like that, then let them. But don’t force me to do it.

  4. Sorry, no video skills here.

But I’ll settle for your “textually skewering these neo-hipster eco-tards” any day, Harvey.

Oh, and if you meet up with anyone extolling the virtues of Earth Hour 3, remind them not only to turn off the lights, but also:

    No hot water.
    No heat.
    No refrigeration.
    No driving.
    No computers.
    No TV.
No cooking of food (not even on an open fire).
    No appliances of any kind.

In fact, recommend that they go without clothing, as well.

And suggest they stay that way for the remaider of their short life.

  5. So, while the liberal wussies are sitting in the dark unarmed, the robbers of the world can unite and rob them. However, they shouldn’t mind giving all their stuff away to these poor folks… they are Socialist after all! Share the wealth!

  6. I’ll use all the oil, gas, electricty, water and all the other stuff the stupid, socialist, lib moonbats retards don’t want….if they want to live in the stoneage starve and freeze to death all I can say is good let them……. cause that means more reasources for the rest of us normal sane common seanse using people……

  7. Sorry, no video editing skills here, either.

BTW, I love when they show waste heat coming out of cooling towers as if it’s pollution.

I swear that the whole point of crap like this is to be as laughable as possible so we fall asleep – and then they kill us all with an engineered super virus. Seems plausible enough. Stay frosty, people.

  8. I don’t have the video skills, but I do want to thank you for reminding me this was coming up. I made a reminder on my Windows Mobile Phone to turn on every light in my flat at the appointed time. The Earth has been here for billions of years. It’s hubris to think backward, anti-progress shite like this is gonna make a lick of difference on this planet. Man I hate Lefttard stupidity.

  9. Let’s see.

How long does it take to spin up an electric generator? Quite a bit longer than an hour. So they won’t actually shut it off. It will still be burning fuel at the exact same rate. In the mean time just how much carbon are those candles spewing into the atmosphere?

Once again the reactive morons of the world doing more harm that good.

  10. If anyone plays Left 4 Dead… “I hate Ayn Rand. I hate elevators. I hate doctors, and lawyers, and cops…”
“Francis, is there anything you don’t hate?”
“You know what? I don’t have vests.”

  11. For The So called “Earth Hour” event I have bought 24 floodlights and a classic boombox.I plan on pointing those suckers straight up while blasting “Living after Midinight” Judas Priest the entire time.

For the record when it comes to saving the planet I agree with Bender from Futurama ” Earth can bite my shiny metal ***!!!”

I submit that global warming only exists as a problem because people are afraid of CHANGE ( not the Obama kind, the good kind). The Enviroment CHANGES get over it and play some Left4Dead.
These people are as nuts as PETA, KKK, Neo-Nazi’s, Socialists, blah blah blah blah crazy phsycholiberal B.S

Don’t worry though I’m sure that a few hold-outs of people with common sense will survive the 2012 Obamaclypse and then the world will be restored to it’s rightful order and Dinosaurs will roam freely with Rocket Launchers on their back. And if any Liberal nutjob or PETA member survives this I will be amazed.

Remember The Green Party is only as powerful as the Socialist party.

Well I guess that I didn’t end that on as happy of a note as I thought I would…….

  12. I think the stupidity of that video actually physically hurt my brain.

Yep, its partially liquified and leaking out of my head.

    Damn hippies.

The thing that gets me though is that it is such a meaningless and useless gesture, even for the lies they support.

  13. As an avid amateur astronomer, I find myself in strong support for cities largely turning their lights off on some occasions, just so many city dwellers can actually get a glimpse of the night sky.

In the California blackout a few years back, when people actually saw the night sky they began calling 911 reporting all kinds of UFOs or other nonsense. It’s not healthy for that many people to be that ignorant about their basic universe.

Turn ’em off on occasion I say. I’ll have my telescope ready.

  14. The “tea parties” being planned for April 15 in the vein of the “Boston Tea Party are silly. Real change (Change we can believe in) will come when patriots stage a “Los Angeles Light Bulb Party” and dump containers of chinese flourescent light bulbs into LA harbor.

  15. The stupidest part of this sham is that the Power companies cannot feasibly reduce the output from their coal-fired power staions in that period to adjust for the reduced usage, So they reduce the output from the windfarms, hydro and nuclear plants that are better suited to variations. Thus not saving one actual iota of the energy that they are claiming that is killing the earth. The term “futile” is the best description of this w@nk.

This is the symbolism of unworking action that highlights the stupidity of the green religion.

  16. was anyone else listening to the beginning of that video reminded of Star Trek episodes featuring The Borg? Assimilating (heh) images of The Borg destroying huge swaths of the planet in order to make everyone think the same thoughts seems appropriate to this movement.

  18. 4 outdoor spotlights, 35 other light fixtures inside and out, 12 candles, 3 lanterns, 2 leftover 3lb fire logs, 2 TV’s, 1 computer, 1 central airconditioning system and a Coleman camp lantern.
    I’m ready.

  19. No skills to loan.

What a great opportunity, though, for somebody to try to recreate Tesla’s experiments… I understand he was always overloading the city grids and causing havoc with his hijinx, so there’ll be, as people point out, LOTS of surplus ‘trons running around that might as well be used.

As a side note, if these idiots were actually successful in getting more than 10% of any given grid to turn off, they’d be well and truly screwed when they found at minute 61 that all of their power stations had shut themselves down to avoid turbine overspeeds due to sudden load loss. I’ve been in hydro plants when the main line fails… no fun and VERY dark. And then very quiet. By the way, do they want the fire departments to turn off their radios and alarms and stuff? Just curious if any of them had even heard of 2nd or 3rd order events.

    Fools.

  20. Many thanks for the reminder. I had overlooked this idiocy and might have forgotten to fire up the yard lights, porch lights and the extended supply of energy wasting devices we thrive on.

Here in the Ozark forest we call home, there is no light visible on a summer’s night. I love it but we shall definitely be visible on this occasion.

  21. Thank you for quoting Ayn Rand. It will take a lot of people understanding her ideas and applying them in their lives to counter the anti-reason, anti-life ideas of the environmentalists.

  22. I need to rip that video, and dust of FCS!

will everyone please join me in turning on all lights possible, all electronics, video game systems, music, etc, on that night? i want us to be a beacon of hope (lol) shining out in the darkness
also, MAKE SURE EVERYONE SEES YOU LEAVE YOUR HOUSE, because if they know all the lights are on, and nobody there, its just silly.

i also advise you to keep your lights OFF before earth hour, then when everybody else goes off, you turn them on

Making signs is also good, make it funny, make it ironic, whatever, something like “do you part to save the earth, turn on all your lights for earth hour!”
or something a little less retarded, like “i support the efforts of man-bear-pig” or
    “al gore is a faggot”
i think im gonna go with the second one

also, isnt styrofoam burning dangerous? please tell me hippies have requested you to burn styrofoam

  23. Sorry , I don’t have any video skills.

But like many other commenters before me, I’ll observe the BS fest, I’ll make it a point to have every light possible turned on. And for good measure, I’ll start the V8 in me SUV and idle it at 3000 RPM for the hour.

If we don’t stand up to these idiots, who will?
