Why Would You Need a College Education to Be a Legislator?

The New York Times has an article, “Many State Legislators Lack College Degrees.” I guess that’s supposed to be shocking, but as I never tire of pointing out, you could literally train a dog to be a legislator. The main part of their job is just to vote yes or no (or Obama’s favorite, “present”) on stuff. If you got a college degree just so you can vote yes or no on stuff, then you lack ambition. Or maybe you got a degree in philosophy and couldn’t do anything with it. People like the staff of the New York Times have this almost worshipful respect of public office, but until we realize these are mainly just idiots who couldn’t hack it in the private sector and aren’t really good at anything, we get stuck with people like Obama ruining our economy.

  1. Frank, you have to have a NY Times account to read that link.

Interesting facts about Congress members from (Answers . com):

    * 29 members of Congress have been accused of spousal abuse.
    * 7 have been arrested for fraud.
    * 19 have been accused of writing bad checks.
    * 117 have bankrupted at least two businesses.
    * 3 have been arrested for assault.
    * 71 have credit reports so bad they can’t qualify for a
    credit card.
    * 14 have been arrested on drug-related charges.
    * 8 have been arrested for shoplifting.
    * 21 are current defendants in lawsuits.
    * And in 1998 alone, 84 were stopped for drunk driving, but released after they claimed Congressional immunity.

So much for our “democracy.” We put ’em there.

  2. I heard about this on the radio this morning (Fox News 910 AM, Armstrong and Getty show). They then did a comparison of State financial status (basically, how big is the deficit?) compared to number of legislators with college degrees. The states in the worst shape had the “best” educated, while those states in the best shape tended to be the “worst” educated. This tend to prove my current theory on what is learned in a college system run by liberals: The ability sound really smart while articulating stupid ideas.

  3. Speaking of dogs, apparently my German Shepherd was being used by a tick; I found a bloated one on my carpet. Unlike the American people, I did not encourage the tick to run for public office. I smashed it with a rock and cleaned up the congealed blood with a garden hose. I recommend this action for all of those in blue states.

  4. @Jimmy: Congress is the only job where driving drunk to work is a Constitutionally protected right.

Let us parse the first paragraph of the article. The NYT wants us to be alarmed at the lack of educational credentials of our elected leaders, yet the their statistics in the same paragraph show that the percentage of legislators with college degrees tracks nearly exactly with the percentage of US citizens with higher degrees. To the Times, that’s representation without education. To me, it’s just representation.

  5. Many of the world’s most successful and innovative people don’t have college degrees, and the lack of brainwashing by idiot liberal professors is probably essential to their success. Both Bill Gates and Steve Jobs don’t have college degrees. Neither does Richard Branson. Neither does Michael Dell (founder of Dell Computers). Walt Disney and Henry Ford both dropped out of high school at age 16. Frank Lloyd Wright never went to high school. Milton Hershey (of Hershey chocolates) only had a 4th grade education. Mary Kay Ash (of Mary Kay Cosmetics) had no college education.

Barack Obama graduated from Harvard…which one of the above-named people couldn’t do a better job as president of the United States than Barry Hussein?

  6. I don’t have a college degree. Changed my major after 2 years and then said “the hell with this” and got a big boy job and haven’t looked back. I am now and IT Consultant and bill myself out at $100 to $150 per hour! BWAAAAAAAA! I work with a lot of people who have Master’s Degrees and they are morons kissing corporate butt climbing the corporate ladder… Yuckomatic! Not this cowboy! I’m a hired gun. I go in, do my gig and leave and I don’t have to kiss any butt, because I don’t work for them! They are just my clients. I need to keep one person happy, the one who signs my checks!!!
