Not sure how valuable this skill is, but I like the key insights he developed as he learned, like crystal vs. glass, the importance of sustaining a steady pitch, and the fact that you can figure out the shatter-pitch by pinging the glass.

Crystal is easier to break for the same reason that you can more easily shear tempered steel than the more flexible steel used for tools.
