Iraqi militant group Ansar al-Sunna, a major player in the insurgency against the U.S.-backed government and U.S. forces, said it was behind the attack.
A defense official in Washington said it was not clear how many of the casualties were Americans.
The attack on a dining hall came at noon when many soldiers at Forward Operating Base Marez, at the northern city’s airfield, would have been eating lunch. U.S. military camps in Mosul have tented mess halls seating hundreds of troops.
“There were an unknown number of rounds in a rocket and mortar attack,” the official said. “We don’t know the breakdown (of dead). We don’t know if it’s U.S., Iraqi, a combination.”
People like Markos “Screw Them” Zuniga have done his best to side with the enemy against our military as to spite Bush’s politics. Who will be the last to die for his rhetoric and partisan hatred?

I just read through most of the comments to kos’s post. There is virtually no mention of the soldiers and the loss of their lives except as a means to blame the President and his cabinet. No comments on their sacrifice. Nothing.
I don’t like to hate people, but they make it nearly impossible not to. I am one of those contractors kos so crudely dismissed. I never was sent over, but when I volunteered, it was not out of a love of money. It was out of love for my country. Just like most civilians, I wanted to help our soldiers any way I could. These people want to help themselves. Kos is scum and I need to leave it at that.
My neighbor is currently waiting patiently to hear word if her husband is one of those dead. The basta*ds who did this can rot in hell…
As for Kos…I can’t even read that sight without gagging…even I could figure out how to post (does anyone else find it mind numbingly difficult) I wouldn’t want to sully myself.

I think it was just bad luck. If you’ve ever seen clips of these guys firing a mortar, they just set up and start dropping rounds down the tube – no aiming, no fire correction from a forward observer, just lob shells. This is harrassment fire and they were bound to get lucky sometime.
My brother’s base in Afgahnistan was subject to this kind of attack from time to time.
In my opinion, to expose the enemy at home, such as Kos, is akin to combat. It’s the war we must fight at home with a double edged sword in defense of our military (let everyone know we will NOT tolerate this type of vitrol, in conjunction with service members in particular & yes they are paying attention & greatly appreciate the effort) and to shine some light on exactly where their loyalties lie in respect to America as a nation.

However, we must remember that this was a war of choice. Bush said we had to take the war to our enemies. And so many people on this forum and others agreed with his bizarre “flypaper” strategy. Well, now that his “flypaper” is working we shouldn’t be so surprised.

Wil is playing the old game of deflect and confuse the issue. Nobody here on IMAO, that I’ve seen, is “surprised” by service member’s wounds and deaths. I see only sadness, prayers, and encouragement. Their issue with Kos seems to be the way he, and others like him, refuse to acknowledge the successes of service members while highlighting any failure or weakness and bringing dishonor to the service of the fallen at the same time as using their pain for political gain/furthering his own warped ideals.
I’ve never been angry at those who disagree with this war, or war in general (although I disagree with their stance), but I do become quite angry, taking it very personal, when service member’s pain & suffering is used in this way by people I know really don’t give a damn about them, or worse, hope for more pain and death to befall them.

Provided that the Rumsfeld Strangler doesn’t get him first, I’m sure someone would gladly volunteer demonstrating to the creep what real torture is; not just the quick and fast stuff with the wooden chair and power-drill.
Due to legal precaution, I do not, in fact, know of any method of torture, interrogation, or any form of inducement of pain that would involve a wooden chair, rope, pliers, anchoring bolts, and a power drill.
Forty percent of the country seems to be solidly against the war in Iraq, and forty percent seems to be solidly in support of it.
Mr. Zuniga is one of the most prominent and widely-read opponents of the war.
I wish Mr. Zuniga would change his mind about the war and become a supporter, but that’s not going to happen anytime soon.
Is he full of hate, is he a traitor? I do think his strident opposition to the war contibutes to the tenaciousness of our enemies, and contributes to coalition deaths and casualties, but I don’t know what motivates him, so I don’t accuse him of hate and treachery.
If he refuses to be converted, then the best responses are supporting the troops materially and personally to the hilt, and duking it out with the appeasers/pacifists/lefties as best we can.
We go to war with the country we have, not with the country we might wish we had.
